Monday morning, a group of OD Shag Club members delivered the gifts and food to Riverside Elementary School for our sponsored Christmas kids. The group included Bill Bacon, Rich Young, Lou Martino, John Setzer, Mike Bejzak and Karen Young. The kid’s parents were called by the school counselor, Felicia Bellamy, to come and pick up the items.
After leaving the school, we went out to North Strand Helping Hands to deliver the remaining food boxes. They weighed them in at 594 pounds. They were very happy to get the food as there is a huge demand at this time of year. Thank you to all those who either brought food or donated money at the Shag Club Party Saturday night. The money was used to buy a turkey and ham for each family plus the other items needed for a nice Christmas dinner for each family. Your generosity was greatly appreciated by the families who already gave thank you cards for the Shag Club to the school counselor. I picked those up today and will bring them to the January Business Meeting.

The OD Shag Club sponsored 8 kids for Christmas with items from their wish lists. Jeanne Brandt and Karen Young shopped for the toys and wrapped them on Monday. Then on Friday, the 13th, Cindy Day, Beth Cornwell, Tina Tomberlin and Karen Young shopped for the clothing on their lists and wrapped it all. We were able to get a winter jacket, an outfit, and extra pair of pants, shoes, underwear and socks for each child with Cindy Day’s discount at Belk’s. Bill and Joan Bacon donated one bike and Sonny and Tina Tomberlin plus Rich and I donated the second bike.
The food donated at the party was sorted by a group of OD Shag Club members at Bill and Joan’s house on Sunday morning. The helpers included Bill and Joan Bacon, Angela (Joan’s daughter) and Tom Weiss, Donna and Burnie Williams, John and Lori Setzer, Linda Campbell, Sandy Cummings, Lou Garrenton, Terry Holmes, Mike and Bonnie Bejzak, Gene Bradshaw, Charles McCarthy and Rich and Karen Young.
The toys, gifts and 8 boxes of food including a ham and turkey were loaded in the van for delivery to the school on Monday morning. The remaining food was boxed up for delivery to North Stand Helping Hands on Monday, also.

Monica has been a member of the ODSC for 8 years and has been involved with many of the activities of the club. She has served as Secretary, Vice President and President. Monica currently serves as chair of the Communications Committee and Co-Chair of the Charity Fun Run, but has spent much time helping with parades, fund raising, Ways and Means, clean sweep, Fun Run and our golf tournament. She has promoted our dance by helping to produce a video for the North Myrtle Beach Historical Museum and by coordinating with the Junior Shaggers to share their talent with our club.
While Monica was President, she began the beginner shag classes and SASS (Share a Shag Step). She was also instrumental in forming the ODSC Foundation to establish 501c3 status for the club. She currently serves as Chair of the Foundation.
Monica has spent many hours working for the club and cheerfully looks forward continuing her work. Please join me in congratulating Monica Powell as our Al Cain Award winner for 2019!
