The forecast for Wednesday September 21, 2016, called for 80% chance of rain. The OD Shag Club Dance Team was scheduled to dance at the Shoe Center in North Myrtle Beach. Knowing this the skies above opened up and low and behold the sun came out as though the heavens knew that there was dancing to be done. Part of the team was blessed to dance for the crowd at the Shoe Center while listening to the Entertainers.

Of course, the Entertainers are a very good band to dance to. Not only did we dance, but also there were the ladies who did several line dances and many of the audience did also participate.

While waiting between songs to dance, Bob and Helon Page instructed members of the dance team on the River Waltz Step for couples. We were able to accomplish what we where suppose to plus we learned a little more steps on the side.

If the weather holds for the next two days we will dance on Thursday and Friday. Who knows what the weather will be like? They say in South Carolina, if you wait 5 minutes the weather will change. So we will wait and see what happens.

I want to thank those members of the dance team that danced:

Bob and Helon Page, Cathy and Rich Jamiolowski, Barbara Hopper, Linda Campbell, Lou Martino, and Linda Wilson (not in the Picture)

Letter From The President October 2016

Wow! September was a busy month for the ODSC! Dance classes, bar crawls, dance team performing all over the Grand Strand, brunch, golf tournament, golf cart give away and I probably forgot a few events!

One of our big events every September is the Golf Tournament. Please give Geoff Girling, Joyce Girling, Ken Meyer, Carol Meyer, Rich Young and Karen Young a hearty thank you when you talk to them.   These 6 people and their teams spent countless hours collecting sponsorships, donations for raffle, setting up the golf tournament, signing up golfers and many other things to make this event go off without a hitch! If you have not been involved with this project in the past, you may be interested to know that they work on this for many months and I am very appreciative of their time and effort. I don’t have all the final numbers yet, but based on my calculations, after expenses, we raised over $8,500 for charities!

On Sunday, September 25th, we had our drawing for the Golf Cart Fundraiser. Go to our news page to find the winner. I would like to thank my husband, Billy Powell, for all the work he put into this fundraiser. Also, I would like to thank each and every one who sold tickets and bought tickets to help support our shag club. This fundraiser helps to support our many activities and charities. I don’t have the final numbers on this yet, but based on my calculations…..it was an outstanding success.

If you missed the brunch, you missed a great party. We gave new name tags to our all Al Cain Award winners so we can recognize all these important people who have contributed wonderful things to our club! Sam and Lisa West’s Junior Shagger’s performed for us. It was absolutely wonderful! Thank you for your generosity! With all the money thrown on the floor, you contributed over $500 to help them with their expenses as they compete around the country.

Now, on to October…..our Election Party will be in October. We have a great slate for officers and board members. Go out to the website and read about all the candidates and be sure and attend the October party and vote! I will not be with you in October as I will be in Connecticut, but Terry McCoy will keep the party hopping!

Stay tuned for updates on new lessons, share a shag step and other events.

Hope you had a great September and an even better October!

The OD Shag Team was asked to dance at Belk’s Shoe Sale at Myrtle Beach Mall on September 10, 2016, at 12 Noon until all the shoes were sold. As you can see by the pictures we had as great time and a great audience. Our spokes person Linda Campbell gave a short history of the Shag Dance and introduced each couple as they began to dance. The Staff at Belk’s are so wonderful to us. The Shoe Manager “Kerry” welcomed us with open arms and provided fruit and vegetable trays. The DJ of the day was Party Time Productions none other than Rich Hargrove. He had all of the songs that we wanted to dance to so we didn’t have to bother with the music. Thank you Rich!

I would also like to thank our Cindy Day for setting up this event for the Team.

Of course, I would like to thank the team members that took out time from their busy day to dance at this event.

Thank you:Bill and Diane Millman, Jay Kellerman, Barbara Hopper, Diane Tindall, Bob and Helon Page, Linda Wilson, Lori and John Setzer, Linda Campbell, Jimmy Harley, Judy Odom, Vic Gillispie and Lou Martino and “Kerry” number 17.

Letter From the President September 2016

August was another good month for the ODSC! We had our Nomination Party and we have some great candidates. Please go out to the website and read everyone’s bio. This is a very experienced group of candidates!

A group of us went to visit the South Strand Shag Club on our Bus to Somewhere trip. We had a great time and the South Strand Shag Club was extremely hospitable! The Cruise to Nowhere was also a big hit with a lot of our new members having their maiden voyage! We have started our Beginner II Lessons. Sonny and Tina Tomberlin are teaching the pivot, boogie walk, and other steps on Thursday evenings in the backroom of Fat Harold’s. Thank you Sonny and Tina for the time you are giving to our shag club!

September will be a busy month for the ODSC. Just to mention a few items, we have SOS, Charity Golf Tournament, Brunch, SASS, Bar Crawls, giving away a golf cart. I guess I need to take my vitamins so I can get through September!

We still need help manning the Merchandise tent and Golf Cart Raffle tent during SOS. Please sign up and work a shift. The shifts are only two hours and frankly, you meet other shag club members and have a good time!

I would also encourage you to purchase a golf cart raffle ticket. This raffle helps to support all the fun things we do such as the Brunch you will enjoy in September. You never know, you might actually win a golf cart!

The last ACSC meeting for 2016 will be held on Saturday, September 24th at the OD Resort. Any member of the ODSC is welcome to join me at the meeting. Just let me know so we can save you a seat!

Hope everyone has a great September!

On Friday, August 26, 2016, the Ocean Drive Shag Club went on their annual Cruise to Nowhere on the Hurricane Fleet out of Calabash N.C. We had 88 guests there. Some paid but did not show. The weather was great, warm, but not hot. It was about a 2 hour trip, and I think everyone had a good time eating and socializing. Thanks to Bill and Joan Bacon for making this possible. Thanks also to Hurricane Fleet crew for getting us out and back safely. I wish to thank all of you for attending our 2016 Cruise to Nowhere, and until next year we hope you enjoy all that the ODSC has planned for us.

Hey everyone,

Last weekend, Google made a change to their Gmail program. Even if you have been receiving emails from Faye Chowning (ODSC) in the past, they now seem to be going to your Spam or Junk folder. Faye sent at least 3 emails in the past week. I will be printing something to give out on Saturday as people check in, but here are the instructions on how to fix it.

Last week, Google made several changes to email. The result is that the emails sent to you from the ODSC (Faye Chowning) are now being put into SPAM or JUNK. Even if you were receiving them before, the changes Google made have them going to SPAM or JUNK. Here is the best way to fix it:

· Go to SPAM or JUNK and find an email from Faye Chowning. There are several that were sent last week.
· Open the email.
· Above the message is a box called NOT SPAM. Click on the box. It will move the message to your inbox.
· This should fix the problem for 2016.

I would ask that you go out and see if you were affected. Also, notify any of your ODSC friends that you know that use Gmail.

This could cause a pretty big problem. It will be hard to let everyone know since sending them an email will not work!

We were invited to Brightwater Independent Living at Brightwater in Myrtle Beach to dance for their residents at their event called “Splash”. We met with the Director of Member Services Wendy Gatzke and she also invited us to be a part of the bi-monthly activities and dance the “Shag” Dance.

She asked us to come early and listen to the Steel Drums demonstration. Several of the Dance Team Members arrived early to listen to the Steel Drums. WOW how exciting was this. Tim (his first day of retirement from the school system) played for about an hour. It sounded as though we were on a Jamaican Island. What a treat! He explained the evolution of the Steel Drums and how he became interested in them. He was a great entertainer. We also had virgin Pina Coladas during the entertainment, as this was a casual event.

As part of the Splash activities lunch was provided to the residents and to our dance team while listening to a keyboard DJ of which we were going to be dancing to. They wore their fancy summer hats and came to have fun.

Along side of us were the Surfside Steppers, who line danced for the residents. The Dance Team joined in. We had a great time. These ladies also danced to the keyboard DJ and danced several line dances.

This was a unique event in that we did not spot light dance. We just danced to the music as played by the keyboard DJ. We also were able to dance with the residents since all of them were able to move around pretty well. I was honored to dance with a 97-year young lady. She had some pep to her step. She was an original jitterbug lady.

I would like to thank Wendy and the dance team members for participating in this event: Diane and Bill Millman, Lou Martino, Linda Campbell, Jay Kellerman, Barbara Hopper, Donna and Burnie Williams, Susan Male, Cathy and Rich Jamiolkowski, Linda Wilson, and Lenny Gardner.

The dance team was invited to dance for the residents of Summit Place Assisted Living Facility located in Little River, SC. This has become an annual event for the Team as we have danced here for the last three years. We have always been welcomed at this facility. A big thank you goes out to Genevieve Prince for having us.

As the residents were wheeled into the activities room, the members of the team were able to mingle with them. They stated that they were so excited to see us dance again. Many of the residents remembered us from last year. It is such a pleasure to see their smiling faces.

Here we danced to our own music and spot lighted each dance. Each couple danced for 1 minute and 30 seconds just long enough to keep the residents interested. It is nice to see the residents clapping and enjoying themselves for the hour that we danced for them. As a matter of fact, we were asked to stay a little longer and dance some more and we did.

We have a great team one that enjoys dancing and most importantly loves to promote and preserve the Shag Dance. The Team also likes to go into the various assisted living facilities not only to dance for themselves but also to dance for others that are not able to.

Thanks to Summit Place for the invite. As you can see the Dance Team is growing. I would also like to thank the members of the team that participated at Summit Place:

Bill and Diane Millman, Connie Livingston, Lenny Gardner, James Thorndyke, Cherie Patalik, Susan Male, Jimmy Harley, Donna and Burnie Williams, Judy Odom, Barbara Hopper, Jay Kellerman, Diane Tindall, Linda Campbell, and Lou Martino.

The OD Shag Dance Team was asked to dance for the residents of Brightwater Assisted Living, one area of the Brightwater Facility. A big thank you goes out to Jo Ann Tufo, the Activities Director for the Assisted Living Facility. Jo Ann was a great help in organizing this event.

This is just one section of Brightwater. The facility is very large and has many different sections to it. Today we danced in the assisted living area. The setting reminds one of an outdoor café. The residents were pushed into the area of the dance floor. This was our first time at this facility and we were welcomed very warmly, not only by Jo Ann, but the residents themselves.

I would like to thank those members of the dance team that danced at Brightwater Assisted Living:

Jimmy Harley, Judy Odom, Cherie Patalik, James Thorndyke, Linda Wilson, Vic Gillispie, Connie Livingston, Burnie and Donna Williams, Diane and Bill Millman, Barbara Hopper, Lenny Gardner, Laura Hardee, Jay Kellerman, Cathy and Rich Jamiolkowski, Randy Overby, Linda Campbell and Lou Martino.

The OD Shag Club was invited to Loris Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Loris, SC on July 26, 2016. This was our first time at this facility and we were anxious to be able to introduce the Team and the Shag Dance to the residents and the staff members.

We also had new members to dance with the team so it was their first time as well. We were welcomed by the Rehab nursing director – Cindy Cox and many of the staff members who stated they were very appreciative of us coming to their facility.

There were approximately 40 residents in attendance and about 10 staff members.

Cindy said that we could dance as long as we wanted, so each team couple danced between 1 1/2 to 2 minutes. The residents oohed and aahed as each couple did various versions of the shag and many of our couples doing various mirrored steps.

Of course, they are always amazed with Lenny Gardner who will be a young age of 94 and the way he can still get out on the floor and sway. His favorite dance is the Cha-Cha.

We enjoyed dancing for the residents and the staff. They have asked us to put them on the schedule for next year.

The team was able to instruct the staff and even one of the male residents who was in a wheelchair in the basic, female turn, male turn, and a pass step. They participated with such enthusiasm. It is always a joy to see the smiles on the resident’s faces and being able to promote the shag dance.

I would like to thank those team members that made this event a great success and to thank them for taking the time out of their busy schedules to share and do what we do best.

Those members are: Randy Overby, Lenny Gardner, Lori Setzer, Laura Hardee, John Setzer, Jimmy Harley, Susan Male, Jay Kellerman, Cathy Jamiolkowski, Linda Campbell, Rich Jamiolkowski, Cherie Patalik, James Thorndyke and Lou Martino

Letter From The President August 2016

What a great month we had in July! First, we attended the ACSC Summer Workshop in Columbia, SC. The ODSC had approximately 14 attendees. It was a great time and we learned quite a bit of new information from the ACSC.

Once we returned home, it was time to plan the Junior SOS brunch. Thank you so much to everyone who contributed food and came and worked the brunch. All the Juniors were so appreciative! We served 236 Junior and their families. We were very proud to be able to give a donation of $1,500 to Junior SOS. This is a very worthy event and like everything else, their costs continue to rise. I am glad we are able to help.

Saturday, July 23rd looked like rain early that morning, but the sun came out and the temperature soared! That did not stop us from having a wonderful ODSC Charity Fun Run. There were 160 people who attended and 146 participated in the activities. Thanks so much to Donnie and Wendy Schultz! They had this running like a well-oiled machine. Many thanks to all the volunteers! We could not have done it without you. Check out Tina Tomberlin’s article about the Fun Run for information about all the winners during the day! The BIG WINNER was the Junior Shagger’s Dance Team (they danced for us at the mid-winter brunch). Net proceeds from this event went to this worthy team of Juniors. The donation was $1,752.00.

In August, we will be busy as little beavers…..business meeting, SASS, Bus to Somewhere, Cruise to Nowhere, Nomination Party, Beginner II Shag lessons, etc. Check out our events page for all the detailed information. In no time, we will be getting ready for Fall SOS.

Hope to see you at one of the August events or maybe I will see you at all of them!

This is one of the most fun events the Shag Club puts on! Boy it’s hot out here! Oh no; I’m gonna have to buy a mulligan to get rid of this 12! I’m about to roast! I can’t believe we haven’t participated in this event before! It’s so hot out here! Oh no; I needed a low card! Can you believe how hot it is?! These were just a few of the comments I heard during the 2016 OD Shag Club Charity Fun Run. Of course the weather was a constant topic of discussion but despite the heat and humidity everyone, all 160 of us seemed to be having a good time.

As always, we started at the world famous OD Arcade. We then made our way down to Castaways, over to 710, up to Decker’s and finished up at Fat Harold’s. We certainly kept Hillside Drive busy! Big thanks to all 5 venues for bringing in extra wait staff and providing raffle prizes.

Speaking of prizes, there were many, many chances to win a raffle prize. Not only did the 5 clubs provide items to raffle but many others as well. Big thanks to NBSC, Tomlinson’s, Graham’s Golf Cars, Chris’s Pizza, Coke, First Citizens Bank and Dolly McDermott for all the donations.

Of course winning a raffle prize was fun but everyone was hoping they would have the winning hand with the highest score, the second highest score or even the lowest score. Tommy Black was the highest score winner with a score of 62 out of a possible 70. The second highest hand was a three-way tie between Debbie Nichols, Dana Hunter and Sandra Appleby. These ladies decided they would split the winnings evenly rather than drawing to see who came up with the highest card. The lowest point winner was JB Nelson. The 50/50 drawing was won by Archie Amerson and Ronnie Rogers. Net proceeds of $1750 will go to the Jr. Shaggers Dance Team.

An event of this magnitude could not happen without great leadership and in their first year as co-chairs Donnie and Wendy Schultz did a FANTASTIC job! They had some really big shoes to fill as Jim and Wanda Queen, Paul and Vicki Harrison and Susan and Kevin Harrell decided to step down after many, actually every year, of putting this event together. I happen to overhear them congratulating Wendy and Donnie on a job well done and I couldn’t agree more. Everything ran like a finely oiled machine! Of course being the humble people they are they said it couldn’t have been done without the support of the volunteers and club members who helped throughout the day. They would like to give a big shout out to Dolly McDermott, Beth and Joe Cornwell, Joyce Girling, Linda Miller, Cassy Shumway, Cindy Day, Dicky Garrenton, Sandy Cummings, Billy and Monica Powell, Carol and Ken Meyer, Terry McCoy, Rich and Karen Young, Dianne Locklear, Teena Hunter, Molly Putnam and Sonny and Tina Tomberlin. Job well done everyone and I can’t wait until next year!!

The month of July has been a very active month for the OD Shag Club. We were well represented at the ACSC Meeting in Columbia, SC and those that went had a great time!! This past Sunday, July 17, we served 236 Junior Shaggers and their families at a brunch at Fat Harold’s. There were about 35 members that got up early to prepare food and serve the Juniors. Thanks to all that came and enjoyed the fun. The Juniors are our future!! The event ended with our president Monica Powell presenting a check to the Junior SOS for $1500.00 from the OD Shag Club. We have a great group of officers that are doing a wonderful job. Go Monica—Let’s Dance!!

Letter from the President July 2016

I hope everyone has a great 4th of July. It is one of my favorite holidays. From the time I was about 8 years old and for many years after, our family celebrated the 4th of July at Myrtle Beach. I am from Kentucky, so it was a great treat to be at the beach! I did not know how to shag, but I loved to go and watch them at the Pavilion.

June was a very busy month for the ODSC and we have several exciting things scheduled for July! In June, we had our first new member social. It was fantastic! Please go out to the articles and read about the event! We also had a great time at Pirate’s Cove.

Lou Martino is hard at work on our Yearbook. Please go and look at our Yearbook on the website. If you have not yet participated, please send Lou a picture and the correct spelling of your name. We would like to have the entire membership of the Shag Club in our yearbook.

In July, we will help celebrate Jr. SOS with a brunch for the Juniors. The event will be held at Fat Harold’s. It is always wonderful to watch the dance we love being done by young people. It makes me believe it will live on in the future!

I am also looking forward to our Charity Fun Poker Run. If you have not participated, you do not know what you have missed. Donnie and Wendy Schultz have a great day planned and I hope you will be able to participate.

One of the most important things we do each year is nominate members for the Board and Officers. Our Nominating Committee is looking for a “few good men/women” to run for our officer and board positions. Please give this some thought and contact one of the committee if you would like to help your shag club.

I hope everyone has a great 4th of July and I hope to see you at our Business Meeting on Tuesday, July 5th.

It was a great time at the Pirate’s Cove on Saturday, June 18th. The ODSC was in attendance and the floor was full and the food was great! Many thanks to all the people who worked to make this a wonderful event for everyone. It started with our hospitality team of Cindy Day, Cassy Shumway, Tim Shumway and a new member, Cyndi Crossland (by the way, she is Tim Shumway’s sister). Isn’t it interesting that when a new member joins and their relative is on a committee, they are put to work on that committee!

Our food committee, Donnie and Wendy Shultz, and their team of volunteers which included Bob Miller, Linda Miller and Terry McCoy were dishing out some fine victuals. The fish was really great, but my favorite was the hush puppies. It was a little warm at Pirate’s Cove, so I ate my dessert first, so my ice cream would not melt.

Kathy McCoy, our entertainment chairman, got everyone out on the floor and we started dancing and then went and asked someone else to dance. The next thing you know, the floor was full and everyone was having a great time. Many thanks to Tootie Brown for all the great music.

Our Ways and Means Chairpersons, Cathy Jamiolkowski and Connie Livingston and their volunteers of Rich Jamiolkowski and Jim Livingston (see what I mean about relatives working on committee functions) were selling 50/50 tickets. The total pot was $273.00. Great job, everyone!

Barbara Hooper won $20 for wearing logo apparel. Joyce Girling won $20 for having her nametag. I want to thank Tootie Brown for drawing the winning ticket for the 50/50. He drew my number…..and I won $137.00. Thank you again, Tootie.

I hope if you attended, you had a good time. If you did not attend, you missed a good time!

See you at the Jr. SOS Brunch!

20160617 New Member Social

New Member Social

On Friday, June 17th, the ODSC Board, Past President’s and Committee Chairpersons had the first annual New Member Social. The purpose of the social was to introduce new members to a smaller crowd and talk about what happens on each committee and hope they will get involved with the club. Sometimes as a new member, it is easy to get lost at a regular party.

As everyone entered the backroom of Fat Harold’s, they were asked to draw a name out of the box. For the most part, new members drew from one box and seasoned members drew names out of a different box. When the signal was given, everyone had to look for their couple match. For example, if you had the name of Little Red Riding Hood, you were looking for the person with the name of the Big Bad Wolf. At that time, you needed to find out something about your partner so if your name was drawn, you could introduce them. Based on all the laughter, it seems that everyone got into the spirit of the game! Several of the new members won prizes which consisted of ODSC logo items.

Lou Martino was taking photos of everyone for the yearbook. (Please go out and look at the Yearbook on our website. If you have a picture that you would like to use, please send it to Lou.)

Based on the feedback, our new members enjoyed the social and I saw quite a few of them at the party on Saturday.

Many thanks to Wendy Shultz for supplying the snacks. Tina Tomberlin and Billy Powell for manning the Hospitality Table and Lou Martino for helping me with the sound system and being the photographer.

Letter from the President June 2016

Well, May was a very exciting and busy month for the shag club and June appears to be shaping up for some of the same!

We had a fantastic party in May! It was our annual cookout at Saville’s on Second. Kitty Earles keep the tunes going and she played a little something for everyone. Many thanks to Kathy McCoy for teaching the fireball line dance. Now we are asking her to teach “Uptown Funk”. The Food Committee led by Donnie Schultz, once again did a fantastic job! Donnie and his team actually started preparing for us around 2:00 in the afternoon and did not finish until the last of the excess food was donated around 10:30 at night. Please take the time to thank Donnie, Wendy Schultz, Jim Queen, Wanda Queen, Kevin Harrell and Susan Harrell!

Also, at the party, we had a cornhole tournament. Our 2016 ODSC Cornhole Club Champions……drumroll, please…….Joe Ferlauto and Clark Chowning! Congratulations to both of them. Everyone had a good time playing cornhole. Thanks to Terry McCoy for being the Cornhole Director.

Now on to June! We will finish our second Beginner Dance Class on June 2nd. Now, we will have 2 graduating classes under our belt. I will let you know when the next class is starting. Our Business Meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 7th at Fat Harold’s. Our SASS (share a shag step) will be on Tuesday, June 14th. Terry and Kathy McCoy will be our instructors for the new step. Even though it is not a club sponsored event, Fat Harold’s will be having a Camp Kemo event on Saturday, June 11th and I hope you can attend. The ODSC will be hosting a New Member Social on Friday, June 17th to introduce the new members to the Board, Committee Chairs and Past Presidents. Hopefully, they will make some new friends and volunteer for a few committees. Our party will be at Pirate’s Cove on Saturday, June 18th. I am not sure what Donnie has in mind yet, but I am sure it will be wonderful!

A couple of quick reminders…..the ODSC Charity Golf Tournament is gearing up and they need help getting hole sponsors, raffle prizes and golfers. Also, we are still selling Golf Cart Raffle tickets. The proceeds from this raffle helps to fund all the fun things we do. If you think you can sell some tickets, call Billy Powell and he will get some tickets to you.

Hope to see you on the dance floor soon!

The ODSC Dance Team was asked to dance for the residents at The Lakes at Litchfield in Pawleys Island for a return performance Tuesday May 24, 2016 at 2PM. This year the residents who saw us last year must have spread the word that we were coming back, because the staff made arrangements for us to dance in a larger room so everyone could enjoy the performance.

This year we were able to dance for a full hour without anyone falling asleep. Each couple on the team danced at least two songs. At the request of one of the residents, we were asked to dance and then switch partners. She was our choreographer for the afternoon. She said that if she were able, she would join the dance team. She danced while sitting in her wheelchair.

A 94-year old male resident rolled over in his wheelchair to Lou Martino and asked Lou if he was a descendent of Gandhi. Of course, Lou said that he was asked that question a lot.

We had the opportunity to instruct the staff in the basic step of Shag. They were very energetic. Thanks to the staff for participating and thank you Mackenzie Stroupe, Activity Director for arranging the ODSC Dance Team to be able to dance at The Lakes.

Nothing goes better than to dance and then be served banana pudding. The dance team was served banana pudding -yummy. One team member offered a resident some banana pudding; The resident kindly refused stating they he had been living at The Lakes for several years.

I would like to thank the members of the dance team for taking time out of their busy schedules for dancing in the afternoon at The Lakes. It was a long day but we enjoyed performing for the residents and for us, we like to dance and enjoyed the fellowship with our team members.

A large THANK YOU goes out to:

Meet our ODSC Ways and Means Chairpersons

20160417 Spring Brunch 016

   Cathy Jamiolkowski         Connie Livingston

Do you know our Ways and Means Workers

There are two people in the ODSC that are responsible for all our Logo merchandise and our 50/50 raffles……and they are Cathy and Connie. I want to tell you a little about both of them. Most importantly, they were gracious enough to take the job of Ways and Means Chairpersons and they are doing a fantastic job!

Cathy is married to her darling husband, Rich Jamiolkowski. They are from Pennsylvania and vacationed here in NMB for years. Once they retired, they started being snowbirds. Then they realized that this is paradise and moved to NMB in August, 2015. Cathy has been a member of the ODSC for two years. Her favorite Shag Club event is Myrtle Manor. She believes it is really rewarding to spend time with the residents and the residents really appreciate all the shag entertainment.

The second member of the team is Connie Livingston. Connie and her husband, Jim, are originally from Ohio have been snowbirds for about 5 years. In 2015, they decided to make NMB their home. Jim has recently been a contractor for the new house they are building and once upon a time, Connie was an Aquatics Director for a health club in Ohio. Connie has been a member for two years and she loves all the parades. Be sure and ask Connie and Jim about their very talented terrier. She does a lot of tricks and is one of the riders in all our parades!

Please take a moment to let Connie and Cathy know how much we appreciate all the work they do for the shag club! They have been troopers and have done a great job!

As everyone was pulling up to Saville’s this past Saturday the 21st for the Annual ODSC Cook Out, it was evident someone had been very busy. That someone was Donnie Shultz and his “crew”: Wendy Shultz, Kevin & Susan Harrell, Jim & Wanda Queen. Smoke was billowing up in the sky, and the smell of burgers and hot dogs on the BIG cooker (thank you Jim Queen) was teasing our taste buds awaiting the call of the color food ticket we were holding in our hand.

Once inside the members had staged out the tables with sides dishes of potato and macaroni salads, deviled eggs, and much more. On another table were some wonderful tasty desserts of cakes, pies and cookies.

The corn hole boards were all set up outside as many were entering their names into the hat to be paired up with a partner who would help them play to a victory. That victory to 1st place was earned by Joe Ferlauto and Clark Chowning. Congratulations!! But I know everyone who played had a great time, (Including myself and my partner Dianne Bauer). For those not wanting to play corn hole, Kitty Earles was spinning the tunes for dancing and Kathy McCoy also taught those who wanted to learn the “Fireball” line dance. There was definitely something for everyone. There was a rumor that we had 160 in attendance.

Before the wonderful night came to a close winners were announced for the following:

Name tag: Kathy Wilson

Logo Winner: Nancy Pardini

50/50 Winner $208: Ron Heidebrink

Music continued to be played by Kitty Earles and members were invited to stay and dance or mingle and enjoy the remainder of the evening with owner Stacy Saville whose hospitality was gracious and very welcoming.

On Saturday, April 30th, the ODSC had their annual post-SOS Clean Sweep.
It was a beautiful day and 28 volunteers participated in during a little sprucing up after SOS.
We picked up 36 bags of trash and a lot of them were brimming over. The group cleaned
Main Street to BiLo, Ocean Blvd. 5th Avenue North to 5th Avenue South and the Beach.

A big thank you to Bill and Joan Bacon and Tim and Paula Webb for having everything ready to go!
Coffee, juice, biscuits and wonderful doughnuts were available along with all the clean up supplies.

Again I want to give everyone a big THANKS!!

See you on the dance floor.

For the first time, the ODSC participated in a Bar Crawl during SOS.
The bar crawl was a big success. Thanks to the members that showed up.
We had a large group and it was noticed by the bar owners and the bartenders when we entered and when we left.
We had a great social time and danced at every bar where we stopped.

During the ACSC meeting, Robin Morley thanked the ODSC for making all the other shag club members welcomed to SOS as we are the home club during these events.
Let’s try to make it bigger and better during the fall and really be the “home team” for the other shag clubs.

See you on the dance floor.

Divas Marathon

It was a beautiful Sunday May morning at a temperature of around 70 degrees. The OD Shag Club Dance Team was invited to dance for the Divas Marathon in NMB. This is one of the many events that the Dance Team can dance for the public and promote the Shag Dance to those who do not know what the Shag Dance really is.

We always have a great time at this event. We get to dance to the crowd and the runners as well as being able to interact with the runners.

The runners range from young to old, tall to short, slow to fast, runners and walkers, men and women, boys and girls, riders and amputees, proud Americans, those who fought for our country, those who are in great shape and those who required assistance, and different nationalities all running for the same cause. One runner came all the way from California to run in this race.

Yes we danced in the street encouraging the runners to do their best. If you look close you will be able to see members of the OD Shag Club as runners. Also look for Howie Thompson the author of the book “Fat Harold The Legendary King of Shag.

Thanks to Jim and Donna for providing the music. And of course thanks to the OD Shag Club Dance Team members who came out at 7 AM to dance in this event. We danced from 7AM to 9AM.

Dance Team Members who participated:

Linda Campbell, John Dryden, Joe Ferlauto, Lenny Gardner, Barbara Hooper, Cathy and Rich Jamiolkowski, Susan Male, Lou Martino, Cherie Patalik, and Diane Tindall.

Letter From the President May 2016

Hey ODSC members:

Well, Spring Safari is over and it is almost summertime! April was extremely busy for the ODSC. We finished our first beginner class. Congratulations to everyone who participated and can now grace the dance floor as a beginner. Good times on the dance floor await you! We were lucky to have Steve and Kitty Earles teach our April SASS (share a shag step). They even had bonus content! We learned 2 together steps.

The Spring Safari brunch had over 330 people in attendance. It seems that everyone had a great time! Sorry, that we were not able to teach the line dance, but we just ran out of time. Thanks to everyone who worked the merchandise tent during SOS. Cathy Jamiolkowski and Connie Livingston, our Ways and Means Chairpersons, sold over $4,000 in merchandise! Congratulations to all that participated.

Many thanks to everyone who worked the Golf Cart Fundraiser tent selling tickets. We have paid for the golf cart and everything sold from this point on will be profit! We have approximately 2,000 tickets to sell. This fundraiser helps with all the expenses of our club. It helps to fund food for the parties, parade expenses, entertainment and DJ’s. If we have any left, then we also put some in the charity coffers for donation. Please take the time to sell tickets and to even purchase one yourself to help fund our club and all the fun things that we are able to do for our members.

For the first time, the ODSC had 3 SOS Bar Crawls. We met at a different bar, most of us had some liquid refreshment and danced a little. Then, we moved to another venue. It was great to see so many ODSC members during SOS. We plan to do something similar during SOS Fall Migration. Thank you Terry McCoy for this great idea.

The ODSC once again won First Place for Best Shaggin’ Troop in the SOS Parade. Thank you Wendy Schultz for all your hard work as parade chairman. Our theme was “Happy Trails” and the float and golf carts looked amazing!   Frankly, all the ODSC members that participated also looked amazing. We had 91 people in the parade. It was fantastic!

We will finish up the month with our Clean Sweep. Bill Bacon and Tim Webb certainly appreciate any help you can give them in cleaning up our lovely streets and beach after SOS!

Now, on to May. We will start our second Beginner’s Class on Thursday, May 5th. This is free for ODSC members and you do not need to have a dance partner! On Saturday, May 7th, the ODSC will have a tent at Mayfest to sell golf cart fundraiser tickets. Please contact Billy Powell if you can help sell a few tickets and stop by and purchase one yourself. On Tuesday, May 10th, Lou Martino and Linda Campbell will be sharing a shag step with our members in the backroom of Fat Harold’s. We will finish up the month with a cookout at Saville’s on Second Street.   A line dance, corn hole, great food and a great dancefloor will be the main attractions! I hope to see you at this event!

Keep on dancing!

What a great way to end SOS! The OD Shag Club, yes, once again, won 1st Place for Best Shag Troop in the SOS parade. Our theme was Happy Trails paying tribute to Don David, a lifetime member of the OD Shag Club as he retired as Parade Chairman for the SOS Parade.

Brian & Debbie Schmitt led the troop carrying our fantastic “Happy Trail” banner! Behind them were a ton of cowboys and cowgirls whooping it up! That was followed by our fantastic float! Way to go Wendy Schultz for all the great float ideas and everything you did to make this another fantastic parade!

I know that I can’t remember everyone on the float, but Sonny Tomberlin was a fantastic barkeep while trying to keep all the saloon girls in line! Linda Campbell just kept selling that wonderful elixir on the float. Rumor has it that the elixir was pretty darn good and had a kick!

The creativity for the golf carts was mind-blowing! Congratulations to all the members with their fantastic golf carts! Naming just a few of our carts, there was a chuck wagon, a medicine wagon, a traveling chicken ranch, a gambling den of iniquity, Indians, a wagon with live chickens and of course, Blazing Saddles.

I had numerous people stop me and tell me how great the troop looked and how much they enjoyed the show! We had 91 members participate with 16 vehicles!

I must say that the SOS Parade is one of my favorite events. I don’t just enjoy the parade, but I truly enjoy getting together with fellow members and coming up with ideas and working together to make them happen.

Once again, thank you to everyone that participated in any aspect of the parade! You make the ODSC proud!

Sunday April 17th the O.D. Shag Club held their annual SOS Spring Safari Brunch at the OD Arcade.
It’s always a fun time when over 320 of your closest friends get together to socialize and eat!! As usual Chris and his team at the Arcade did a wonderful job providing a great breakfast.

Big thanks go to our Hospitality Committee for quickly signing everyone in and handing out the tickets for the Logo Wear and Name Tag drawings as well as those all-important colored food tickets! Donnie and the Food Committee, along with the server volunteers, did a fantastic job keeping the food line moving right along. It takes a while to feed over 300 people and we appreciate everyone’s patience during the process.

Linda Morrison, Membership Chairperson, was set-up to take in new memberships as well as renewals. I understand we had 6 new members join Sunday morning. Welcome to the Club!!

The Ways and Means Committee was busy selling new OD Shag Club logo wear and 50/50 raffle tickets. A big shout out to John Barringer and Nancy Sook for selling over $700 in tickets. Congratulations to the winners of the Logo, Name Tag and 50/50 drawings!!

What would the Brunch be without Murl Augustine spinning the tunes from the DJ Booth? We appreciate his dedication to our Club. Unfortunately we ran out of time for the line dance class but maybe we can talk Kathy McCoy into doing it at the next party??

Thanks to everyone who participated in making the event a success and we look forward to doing it all over again in the Fall.

Letter From the President April 2016

March was a busy month for the OD Shag Club and April will be no exception. Our beginner shag lessons started and we have approximately 25 people learning to shag. They are doing a great job. I saw several of them on the dance floor at the Chili Cook-off and they were looking good. Thank you Sonny and Tina Tomberlin for volunteering your time to teach the dance we all love to our members.

The Chili Cook-off in March was fantastic! We have three celebrity judges: Harold Worley, Milford Powell and Elaine Harrington. They did a fantastic job. I know that I would not want to taste all the different pots of chili that were in the contest. The winners were: lst place – Connie Livingston, 2nd place – Paula Webb and 3rd place – Faye Chowning. Way to go! Thanks to Donnie and Wendy Schultz for making this such as great event!

April will be a busy month! We have our business meeting on Tuesday, April 5th. On April 12th, Steve and Kitty Earles will be teaching in our monthly Share a Shag Step, SASS, at Fat Harold’s at 6:00 p.m. I can’t wait to learn something new!

Spring SOS will start on Friday, April 15th and we will be busy. We will have a tent in the parking lot of Fat Harold’s and will be selling merchandise the first weekend of SOS and Thursday and Friday of the next week. Cathy and Connie will be looking for volunteers to help.

We will be selling golf cart fundraiser tickets every day during SOS, so Billy will need a lot of volunteers. This is our big fundraiser and the money is used to fund our events such as the Oyster Roast, parades, cookouts, and some of our charity giving. Please volunteer to help with the fundraiser.

Another highlight this year is our very own, Paul Harrison, will be receiving his ICON award at the ACSC meeting on Saturday, April 23rd at 10:00 a.m. at the OD Resort Beach Cub. Any member of the OD Shag Club that would like to come and celebrate this wonderful honor with Paul is more than welcome!

Once we finish watching Paul received his ICON award, we will jump on our golf carts and start lining up for the SOS parade. Wendy Schultz has done another outstanding job and getting this organized again. If you have not signed up for the parade, contact Wendy. It is a barrel of fun!

And if that was not enough fun, we will finish out the month cleaning up our little strip of paradise with our Spring Clean Sweep. Bill Bacon and Tim Webb will be looking for volunteers to help with our Clean Sweep. It is a good time socializing with other members and doing something good for the community.

So rest up for a few days and let’s start April out with a bang!

What a fun time we had at the chili cook off party at Fat Harold’s last night. There were 138 members in attendance. It was a small gathering but a great one! Thanks to all of you who brought chili and desserts, I thought it was all good. The Food Committee did a wonderful job once again and the Hospitality Committee did a great job also.

  • 1st place – Connie Livingston $75.00
  • 2nd place – Paula Webb $50.00

Congratulations to the three of you for making such great chili!

Thanks to our judges. The judges were:

  • Harold Worley
  • Milford Powell
  • Elaine Harrington

I am sure they probably had some heart burn after trying all that chili.

Thanks to the Entertainment Committee. Kathy McCoy sponsored a dance contest where you collected beads whenever you asked someone to dance. The dance floor was full most of the night. The two people who collected the most beads and each won a $20 gift certificate to Fat Harold’s were Susan Harrell and Brian Mitchell.

Other winners included our 50/50 winner, Diane Bauer who walked away to go shopping with $201. Our Name tag winner was Tim Shumway and he collected $20 and our Logo winner was Sandra Sessoms who also collected $20.00.

It was a great night!

Twenty-six golf carts were beautifully decorated and carried 106 members donned out in their St. Patrick Day apparel. Thanks to Cathy and Bob Sanders for carrying our banner. I am happy to report that the OD Shag Club won Second Place in the Non-Profit division of the parade!! Way to go Wendy and Donnie Schultz for organizing our troop for the parade. Special thanks also to Susan Harrell for helping to sign in participants, Tina Tomberlin and Monica Powell for helping to pass out beads, and Pat Harris for taking photographs. I am always so proud to see how creative our members are with their golf cart decorations and costumes! You didn’t let me down this year!! A fun time was had by all!

Billy Powell also had a booth set up at the festival for the golf cart fundraiser that turned out to be a big success. Two hundred forty-three tickets were sold. Thanks go out to Rich Young, Sonny Tomberlin, Brian Schmitt, Debbie Schmitt, Lou Garrenton, Bill Anderson, Elaine Powers, Jerry Harrell, Bill Sawyer, and Jon Haris for helping to man the booth and be such great sales people. Thank you Billy! Another great day for the OD Shag Club!

Letter From The President March 2016

It is the beginning of March and I, for one, am happy to hope that warmer weather in on the way! If you missed the Oyster Roast, you missed a great time. I want to thank Donnie Schultz and his partner in crime, Wendy Schultz for all their hard work. Listed below are the people who helped Donnie with the Oyster Roast! These folks set up the tent, cooked all day, set up the tables, garbage cans in the Arcade, broke down the tents, tables, took the oyster shells back to the recycle center…..in other words, they worked all day and half the night to make sure the rest of us had a good time. Be sure and thank them.

Clean Sweep Winter 201601

Clean Sweep

Our first Clean Sweep Event for 2016 was held on Saturday, January 29th. If you are not sure what this means, the ODSC helps the city of North Myrtle Beach after all SOS events by cleaning the streets and the beach. We go five blocks down Ocean Drive and work our way from Bi-Lo back to the Pavilion. After Spring Safari and Fall Migration, we also do the beach for 5 blocks. Many thanks to H Lee for letting us set up at the Pavilion.

Thirty of the ODSC members braved the cold and cleaned up the streets of downtown North Myrtle Beach. Many thanks to our chairpersons: Bill Bacon, Joan Bacon, Tim Webb and Paula Webb. They kept us organized and fed us biscuits, doughnuts, coffee and juice. After we picked up 28 bags of trash, everyone was invited for adult libations at Bill and Joan’s.

Thank all the members who were able to participate in this event. Hope everyone will be able to participate in the Spring!

Letter From the President February 2016

Welcome to February and for the Panthers fans…keep pounding and for the OD Shag Club members…Keep Dancing! We will have several opportunities to keep dancing this month. The first opportunity will be to join Sonny and Tina Tomberlin at our SASS event (Share a Shag Step) at Fat Harold’s in the backroom on Tuesday, February 9th. We are still working on beginner lessons for ODSC members. I will keep you posted.

On Saturday, February 20th, the Donnie Schultz and Team World Famous Oyster Roast will take place at the OD Arcade at 6:00 p.m. You don’t want to miss this. If you are not a big fan of oysters, there will be a delicious Chicken Bog and of course, lots of socializing with all your ODSC friends. Our DJ will be Bill Anderson. Linda Morrison will be taking membership applications and selling SOS cards. Our Ways and Means Team, Cathy and Connie, have some great new apparel for sale!

Looking back to January, I have two big announcements! Paul Harrison was named one of the five ACSC ICON winners for 2015. An Icon Winner is someone who has made significant contribution to his or her Shag Club and to the Shag Community. I believe we can all say with a resounding “YES”, Paul Harrison is someone who has made significant contributions to the ODSC.

The second announcement is 2016 is the last year that Wendy Schultz will be the parade chairman for the ODSC. You ask, why is that? Well, They received a promotion! Wendy and Donnie Schultz will be the SOS Parade Chairmen for the SOS Parade starting in 2017! Isn’t that exciting! It is a great honor for them and a great honor for the ODSC to have such wonderful and experienced people in our club that the SOS Board felt they would be the perfect Chairman going forward!

If you missed the brunch, you missed a great time! The Junior National Shag Dance Team entertained us and they were fantastic! They travel to competitions all over the USA to preserve and promote shag dancing. Check out their Facebook page or website! It was wonderful to see how they represent us all over the USA!

Well enough for now, I hope to see you at SASS and at the Oyster Roast!

The OD Shag Club sponsored 8 children from 2 families this year for Christmas. Clothing and toys were purchased for each child. Members of the club brought non-perishable food items to the club’s Christmas party, which was then divided between the two families.   We would like to thank those who brought food that night and helped to make a very Merry Christmas for these kids and their families. Letter From The President January 2016

Happy New Year ODSC Members!

I hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year! Now it is on to 2016! We have many events planned for 2016 and I hope each and every one of you can join us sometime this year.

Our first event for the year is of course, our monthly Business meeting. All of our business meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the backroom of Fat Harold’s. Our first meeting for 2016 will be on Tuesday, January 5th. I would encourage you to attend. It is a great way to become more involved with the club and to learn how the club operates.

Our second event is a new event! SHARE A SHAG STEP – On the second Tuesday of each month, a pair of our members will share one of their favorite shag steps with the rest of us! In January, we are excited that Kevin and Susan Harrell will be our instructors. So grab a partner and join us to learn a new step on Tuesday, January 12th at 6:00 p.m. in the backroom of Fat Harold’s.

The ACSC Mid-Winter dates are January 15th though the 17th. The ODSC will hold our Mid-Winter Brunch on Sunday, January 17th, 10:00 a.m. at the OD Arcade. Murl Augustine will be our DJ. I hope to see you at the Brunch.

One of the things that all the members enjoy is looking at our photos on the website. We are still looking for some photographers. If possible, we would like to have at least 2 photographers so they can share the fun and one member will not have to attend every event. If you are interested, please let me know via email mwpowell948@windstream.net or call me at 704-996-7032.

Our last event for January will be the Clean Sweep. It is an opportunity to do a good deed for the city. Bill and Joan Bacon and Tim and Paula Webb are our chairpersons for the Clean Sweep this year and I am sure they would love to have you attend and help out. The Clean Sweep will be held on Saturday, January 23rd at 8:30a.m. We will meet at the OD Pavilion. Food and drink will be provided.

I am looking forward to seeing you and working with you in 2016!

The Joy of Christmas is giving. We would like to thank all the members who brought food for the two needy families that the OD Shag Club adopted for Christmas. The two families had a total of eight children for whom we were able to provide Christmas presents and brighten their holiday. I also would like to thank Cindy Day for helping me to shop for the Christmas gifts; those members who worked so hard to sort the donated food for the two families; Bill and Joan Bacon for hosting the sorting job and Wendy and Donnie Schultz, Peggy Christie, and Rich Young who delivered the items to the school. It warms our hearts to be able to do this each year and provide a Christmas for families who need our help.

2015 Christmas at the Manor

I would like to start off by saying thank you to all the members of the OD Shag Club who came out and participated in this special evening. The residents of the Manor, and there were many in attendance, were so thoroughly entertained that by nights end everyone was still in their seats.

The night started off with the OD Shag Club Dance Team, doing a couple of group dances. Linda Campbell, Lou Martino and Lenny Gardner then entertained the residents with a three-person dance. Lenny told a few jokes. The woman of the Club then proceeded to give out the brooches that the club provided. Cookies and punch were distributed while the brooches were pined on the lady residents. The party continued as yours truly cranked up the music and we danced with most the residents.

Paul Craver arrived and entertained the residents with two beautiful songs “Make the World Go Away”, and “White Christmas”. As Paul sang these songs he worked the room looking into the faces and holding hands with many the lady residents, he certainly made them feel special. Thank you Paul.

Linda Campbell and Lou Martino, who dressed as toy soldiers, came out and proceeded to march up and down the room, than stood at attention as Santa (Bob Sanders) made his entrance. Santa personally greeted each and every resident as the members of the club were distributing the presents.

We were than entertained by Sheila and Bill Blazer, who are participants in the 2016 National Shag Championship. Sheila and Bill gave us a preview of their dance routine for the Nationals and the residents were in complete awe.

The members, along with Santa than danced and sang with the residents, we had a group sing-a-long and we closed with everyone singing “GOD BLESS AMERICA”

All in all it was a very good evening both for the residents of the Manor as well as the members of the club.

A special thank you goes to Jon Harris, our Master of ceremony for the evening.

Until next year, this is Joe Ferlauto, your Myrtle Beach Manor Chair, saying thank you and may each and every one of you have a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.

SOS Brunch

Yes oh Yes it’s SOS and it is time again for the OD Shag Club Fall Brunch held at the OD Arcade. The rain didn’t deter some 324 shag club members and their guest from coming and enjoying the great music of Terry McPhail.   As members and guests waited for Chris and his great staff to serve “adult beverages”, they were enjoying the coffee and conversations of catching up with those they hadn’t seen from last years Fall Brunch or even from the Spring Brunch. There was lots of laughter and smiles. It was especially exciting to see our “youngest at heart” member, Lenny Gardner, there as he had suffered a serious fall and is recovering and is now easing his way out some. Welcome Back Lenny!

Before breakfast was served, President Monica Powell had a very special presentation to each of the past Al Cain award winners. As their names were called, she presented them with a new name badge, which indicated that they were the recipients of this prestigious award. Each was honored to be wearing these badges in the future to OD Shag Club events.

As the food ticket colors were being announced and the snake of people lined around the dance floor, many people took advantage of the tunes being spun by DJ Terry and we all enjoyed watching them dance.

As entertainment for the Brunch we were honored to have Sam West Jr troupe of dancers, the Shag Time II and the Wee Baby Blues. They entertained us with their awesome dancing and the crowd threw money on the floor to help support their travel expenses as they compete. We were all in awe with the incredible talent these young people have as several were just 7-8 years old all the way to 14-15 years old. If only we “seasoned” adults could move like that!

The Name Tag Winner was Kathryn Wooten who was rewarded with $20 for remembering to wear her nametag. Yea!   Peggy Lugan was given $20 for wearing her OD Shag Club logo and Diane Tindall went home with over $300 + for the 50/50 drawing. WooHoo! Thanks to all who bought 50/50 tickets.

As the brunch was coming to a close it was reminded that we were having a Bar Crawl on Tuesday 9/20 starting at Pirates Cove at 6:00pm then transitioning to Fat Harolds. We will do it again on Thursday 09/22 starting at 6:00pm at the OD Arcade and then moving to Ducks, so come join us for some great fun, fellowship and of course so great shaggin’…..cause YES OH YES….ITS SOS!!!!

What a beautiful night for a parade! There was not a rain cloud in the sky, but there was a chill in the air. It felt like Christmas! We had 102 people that were in the finest Christmas outfits for the parade and 29 golf carts that were decorated from roof to the tires. What a great turnout! We had 2 toys soldiers to hold our banner to lead the OD Shag Club through the NMB parade then we had the walkers to hand out candy and beads to the children. Everyone did a great job. The OD Shag Club was escorted out by a giant 4-car train; then all the colorful and decorated golf carts followed. It was a great time for everyone that was in the parade……MERRY CHRISTMAS TOO ALL OF THE OD SHAG CLUB MEMEBERS.

Letter From the President December 2015

It has been a great 2015!!! This will be my last letter and it has been an honor to serve as your President. I can’t express enough to you how much I appreciate the Board, Committee Chairs and Members that have given their time and energy to ODSC, making this a wonderful experience.

On November 19th at Fat Harold’s, the Board and a few club member met for the Charity Donations. The club was able to help the Hall of Fame Foundation, Ellen Taylor Foundation, North Strand Helping Hands, NMB Explorers, NMB Humane Society and Teen Angles. The members work very hard every year at the Charity Golf Tournament to provide these funds. Earlier in the year it also provided funds for Junior SOS and Camp Kemo.

We had right at 200 members and guests attend our Thanksgiving/Re-Up Party on November 21st at Duck’s Beach Club. Thanks to Paul Craver for being our DJ for the evening and Duck’s for closing their business to the public and giving us a venue for our event. Donnie Schultz, Jim Queen and Faye Chowning, along with many volunteers, did a fantastic job preparing and serving the Turkey, Ham and Dressing.

The Christmas Parade will be held on Saturday December 5th at 5:30pm. We will need to arrive no later than 5pm. It looks like good weather!! See the emails sent out by Billy Powell to get more information.

At 6pm on December 7th, the ODSC will be going to Myrtle Beach Manor to entertain the residents. The club will be providing Christmas gifts from Santa, snacks, dancing and singing Christmas Carols. They look forward to our visit all year, so please make arrangements to attend!!!

Our Christmas Party at Fat Harold’s is on December 12th, starting at 6pm. We will be collecting can goods along with nonperishable items for donation to less fortunate families. Ray Scott will be our DJ for the night and the Food Committee is already hard at work preparing a festive dinner.

Merry Christmas and Keep dancing my friends!!!!!

2015 Thanksgiving Party

Thanksgiving Party

The location of the November party was Duck’s Beach Club, where 197 people enjoyed a bountiful Thanksgiving feast. Donnie Schultz did another excellent job planning the meal – thanks to him, Faye Chowning and the many helpers for keeping the food flowing and the tables replenished. Thanks also to all the members who contributed side dishes and delicious desserts for the party and to the Hospitality Committee for keeping things moving at the check-in table.

If you wanted to do some early Christmas shopping, Beth and Joe Cornwell were selling club logo merchandise. It was a busy evening, with Nancy Sook and John Barringer doing a fantastic job selling 50/50 tickets, while Fritz Eckhardt took photos for the Club’s website. Jerry Taylor’s name was drawn for wearing logo apparel, while Ken Meyer was the nametag winner and Jerry Harrell walked away with $243 as the lucky winner of the 50/50 drawing.

While Paul Craver provided the music, Mimi Benedict and Pat Folds started out the dancing, with John Barringer and Dennis Beaudreau leading them. It was good to see everyone out on the dance floor working off all that food. I had a great time and I hope you did too.

Laura Hardee – Board Member

DSCN3999For those of us who have been blessed to live on or near North Myrtle Beach, the Shag dance and beach music have been ingrained in our hearts and souls. I grew up near Loris, only a few short miles form the Ocean Drive section of NMB. At an early age, my brother Tommy would sneak me into concerts to see groups, like The Drifters: The Tams and The Swinging Medallions, I was immediately hooked and my love affair with the Shag and its music was born.

After graduating form Green Sea High, I went to Horry Georgetown Tech with an associated degree in Secretarial Science. I am a member of the Loris Garden Club. I was soon married to Lewis Hardee and we reared three successful children. Although I have worked 29 years at the Clerk of Court Office at the Conway Court House, I have never forgotten my love of the Shag and its importance to our beloved beach. In 2012, I joined the O D Shag Club and have recently decided to campaign for a position on Board of Directors of the amazing group. The Shag Club is as important to me as breathing and I will be a positive example for our club members and future members. It is my goal to preserve this institution carry on its integrity and provide future generations with the opportunity to experience this special dance though our unique music. I am fully committed to this group and will hold myself to a higher standard while sitting on your Board of Directors.

The OD Shag Club Dance Team was asked to dance at Belk’s Department Store at the Myrtle Beach Mall on November 14, 2015. Their theme for the event was called Santa Fest. We arrived at Belk’s around 1230pm and were met by Kerry Brown, Department Manager. The shoe department was very busy since they were having a big sale on shoes so we had a pretty big audience to dance for. Our team answered several questions as to who we were and were we were located. A couple of the shoppers requested an application to join the OD Shag Club. After we danced an elder couple approached me and asked if we could play 60-minute man since that was there song back in the day. Although the gentleman was unable to dance due to his physical condition he leaned against the mirror and danced with Barbara Harper. He wife of 58 years danced with Lenny Gardner. They could not have been more grateful. Thanks to Scott for playing our music. I would like to thank those members of the Dance Team who danced at this event:

Letter From The President November 2015

There are so many things in our lives that we are thankful for and there are times I don’t even know where to begin. We are always grateful for our family, our health and what we were able to accomplish in our life. I was given a great gift when I joined this club and I’m thankful every day for the opportunity to know and love so many wonderful people. Thank you!!

We had our Election Party at Pirate’s Cove on October 24th and congratulations to the 2016 Board of Directors. Also, we announced Karen Young as the 2015 Al Cain Award winner. Thanks goes to Milford and John Powell providing the Fish Fry that we missed in June and to Jay Nelms for being our DJ for the evening.

Our Thanksgiving Party will be held at Duck’s Beach Club on November 21st and hope to see you there. The Party will start at 6pm and this is also the time to renew your membership for 2016. The website has made it easy to print your membership application, if you would like to save some time by having it filled out prior to the event. The ODSC will be providing turkey, ham, dressing and gravy. The members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert and to arrive by 5:30, this will allow the Food Committee to arrange and organize the tables.

The Christmas Parade will be on December 5th at 5:30. Let’s get those decorations out and have us a good time. Make sure you get there early to sign in, this also allows us preparation time so that we look our best for everyone watching the parade. Billy Powell will be sending emails out with all the details of the parade.

Myrtle Beach Manor has been scheduled for the 7th of December at 6pm. The OD Shag Club will provide the residents with a Christmas Party that includes Entertainment, Shag Dancing and Christmas gifts. The trailer will be at the front door of Harold’s on the night of this event. We will be meeting to box the items on Sunday, December 13th for delivery on Monday, December 14th. I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving with your friends and family and pray that everyone is safe in their travels for the holidays.

Thanks to Milford Powell for allowing us to take over Pirates Cove for a few hours and the Food Committee, along with John Powell, for arranging a great Fish Fry for the club. Jay Nelms was our DJ for the event and Pat Harris was our Photographer.

This was also the night that we announce the Al Cain Award Winner for 2015. The purpose of the Award is to recognize members who have made outstanding contributions to the OD Shag Club. This year’s winner of this award goes to Karen Young for her continuous support and dedication to the club, going above and beyond the call of duty.

Thanks to everyone that attended, voted and made this another wonderful gathering of friends!!

A group gathered with me this morning directly after the clean sweep and kept right on cleaning. What a mess!! The ODSC lost a great deal in the storage unit but the majority of it was old. Everything had to be removed and the unit was swept out. What ever could be saved, was wiped down with cleaner, reorganized and returned to storage in dry containers.

Thank you so much to everyone who came out and helped.

The weather held out for us this morning and we had a very productive clean sweep. There were 23 bags of trash collected by the 19 people in attendance. Great Job!!!! The members enjoyed coffee, juice, Hardee’s biscuits and doughnuts.

The remaining food that was leftover was donated to the Cherry Grove Fire Department. They were very happy to have breakfast and they appreciate us helping with keep the streets clean.

Thank you goes out Nancy Queen and Judy Nutt for getting the food, vests and grabbers along with Fritz Eckhart for taking pictures.

Our 25th Annual SOS/ODSC Charity Golf Tournament was again held at the Valley at Eastport Golf Club in Little River, SC. Seventy-three golfers took part on a beautiful day for golf. Everyone enjoyed meeting and greeting old and new friends. The golfers were from all over the US and a lot of local players also.

Golfers started arriving about 7:30 am. They were greeted by the ladies and bags were checked in. Liquid sunshine, biscuits and donuts were available for everyone. After a brief welcome by Geoffrey Girling and Bill Jones, the GM of the golf course, Sonny Tomberlin explained the changes in the rules, the putting contest, the marshmallow long drive contest and shortcut to eagle. The shortcut to eagle gave the golfers an opportunity to play from the 150 yard marker.

All winning teams scored under par.

The following golfers won cash prizes:

Glen Phillips – closest to the pin
Pat Lynch – closest to the pin
Ron Lewis – putting Contest
Curtis Edmondson – marshmallow long drive

1st Place Team
Curtis Edmondson, Bob Miller, Dale Rinker, David Pitman

2nd Place Team
Jim Harris, Dale Holland, Dick Hughes, Frank Bohn

3rd Place Team
Bill Gainsman, Jerry Melton, Kevin Brynes, Harvard Turnbull

Last Place Team (New this year)

This year’s golf tournament was led by Geoffrey Girling and Sonny Tomberlin. The Raffle Prizes and the hole sponsors was led by Karen and Rich Young. Board Liaison was Brian Schmitt. Administrative assistance was provided by Joyce Girling, Monica Powell and Karen Young.

Many ODSC members participated in obtaining hole sponsors and prize donations. Many members also participated on Tournament Day doing various jobs from picking up food, registering golfers, checking bags, selling mulligans and raffle tickets, cooking hamburgers and hot dogs to being cart girls. All volunteers added to the success of the tournament. Our Club is fortunate to have each of these caring and participating volunteers. As always, special thanks to each of them for their dedication and participation.

The OD Shag Club Fall Migration Brunch was held at the OD Arcade and Lounge on Sunday September 20th at 1pm. Cindy Day and the Hospitality Committee volunteers worked very hard at check-in, we had a great turnout with 309 Members and Guests. The food was served by the Food Committee, which is Donnie Schultz and Faye Chowning, along with many volunteers. Mitch, Chris and the staff at the Arcade did a fantastic job providing Liquid Sunshine and a full breakfast for everyone.

Thanks to Kitty Earles for being our DJ for the Brunch. Kathy McCoy with the Entertainment Committee planned some fun with the food tickets by calling your color and members danced to the Chicken Dance, Twist and Hokie Pokie. Many members danced to all three.

Beth and Joe Cornwell with Ways and Means sold a great deal of apparel for the club. John Barringer and Nancy Sook volunteered to help out and did wonderful selling 50/50 tickets. Congrats to the lucky winner of the 50/50, Jim Bayreuther.

Please go to the website and view all the pictures that were taken during the Brunch by Fritz Eckhart, the ODSC Photographer.

Thanks to everyone that attended and volunteered their time to make this another great gathering. I’m sure we are all looking forward to the Mid-Winter Brunch in January 2016.

Letter From The President Sept 2015

Hello fellow members!!

Our Cruise to Nowhere on August 21st and even in the rain we had 90 people in attendance. Thanks to Helen Eckhart for all her efforts to make what was another fun boat ride.

The ODSC August Party was held at Fat Harold’s Beach Club on the 22nd and if you were not there, you missed a great dinner. The members cooked and prepared all the food. Donnie Schultz, Jim Queen and their crew cooked and chopped the barbecue, Wanda Queen made the baked beans, Susan Harrell made the coleslaw, and I made the strawberry shortcake, banana pudding and brownies. Faye Chowning had members volunteer to help set up, serve the food and clean up, also members were kind enough to bring side dishes and desserts, so there was no shortage of food. Entertainment had the members participate in dancing to great music played by Jimmy Buffkin. Thank you to everyone who made this a wonderful night. This was our Nominations Party and looks like you will have a hard working Executive Board in 2016.

SOS is coming up on September 18th!! The ODSC Charity Golf Tournament will be held at The Valley at Eastport in Little River on the 19th and our ODSC SOS Fall Migration Brunch at The OD Arcade is on the 20th, 10am. We will also be selling Golf Cart Fund Raiser tickets and ODSC Apparel in the parking lot of Fat Harold’s. The winner of the Golf Cart Fundraiser will be announced on September 27th, 1pm at Fat Harold’s Beach Club. These committees work very hard for the club but cannot do it alone. They will need volunteers to help. If you are able to donate your time to any of these committees, even if it is only a couple of hours during 10 days of SOS, it will be appreciated.

Hope everyone has a great SOS!!

Bill Bacon – Vice President

DSCN4004Hello fellow Shag Club members, my name is Bill Bacon and I am running for the office of Vice President of the O.D. Shag Club for 2016. To give you a little information about myself, I was born in Wilmington but grew up in Whitevillle, N.C., only about 42 miles from Ocean Drive. I knew when I came to O.D. for the first time, when I was about 5 years old, that one day I would live here and now I do!

In high school we would come to the beach nearly every Saturday night in the summer and usually go to Sonny’s in Cherry Grove (where HOTOS is or maybe by the time you read this, Was). Sometimes we would go to the Pad, the Barrel and the Spanish Galleon, where we usually went when I was in college.

After college and law school I practiced law in Clinton, N.C. for over 40 years. I have two married sons and my wife, Joan, has two married daughters. Between us, we have seven grandchildren ranging from first graders to first year in college!

As I said, I live in the Ocean Drive section of NMB now. We bought a condo in Cherry Grove in 1999, then started building our home in Ocean Drive in 2005 but didn’t get in until 2006. My wife and I joined the O.D. Shag Club shortly after that and have been members ever since.
Needless to say, this is the BEST club with the nicest and friendliest people I have ever seen.
Since being a member, I have helped with numerous oyster roasts, Clean Sweeps and other events. I was fortunate enough to be elected to serve on the Board of the O.D.Shag club for the past two years and have really enjoyed it.
I hope my years of experience as a practicing lawyer in N.C. have been a benefit to our Shag Club and hope to continue to serve the club next year as your Vice President.

Jerry Harrell – Board Member

DSCN4000I am a native of South Carolina, born in Clover, where I attended school and graduated from Clover High. Shortly after graduating I joined the army. After serving in Vietnam for two years, I returned home, met Linda, and married her in 1972. At night I attended college courses on the GI Bill and received a BA in Business Administration. In 1978, Linda and I had our daughter and raised her in Clover. I worked for 34 years in the textile machine repair business until most of the mills closed. After that, I worked in Charlotte for several years until we decided we wanted to move to the beach. Linda and I are both retired and feel that we have made our home in paradise.
We have been members of the OD Shag club for about 11 years. During that time, I have enjoyed the fun and fellowship and have met many wonderful people. I try to participate in all the meetings and I have worked selling golf cart tickets, OD Shag clothing, and 50/50 tickets. I have decorated my golf cart for the parades and helped with many other club activities. I look forward to serving you on the board.

Vic Gillispie – Board Member

DSCN4001My name is Vic Gillispie. I am originally from Danville, VA where I started dancing since 1956. I grew up in Swepsonville, NC and have danced throughout North and South Carolina for the better part of my life.

I have served 2 years on the Board of Directors for the Society of Brunswick Shaggers and 2 years as President of the Society of Brunswick Shaggers. I worked for Fat Harold Beach Club for several years. As an artist, I have donate my artwork and prints to every club in the ACSC, Camp Kemo and many other Shag Related Projects.

My reasons for wanting to serve on the OD Shag Club Board of Directors:

  1. To grow membership both locally and nationally.
  2. Help the OD Shag Club become involved in projects to help local and county organizations and non-profits.
  3. Get all members of the ODSC involved in the best club in the ACSC.
  4. Work to grow the junior Shaggers Association

I am very familiar with the Shag world and have always promoted the shag dance at every level.

I would appreciate your vote for a seat on the OD Shag Club Board of Directors.

Linda Campbell – Board Member

My name is Linda Benfield Campbell and I am currently a resident of the Longs community after relocating here from Columbia SC 2008. I am originally from Statesville, NC and am currently employed with Aflac, whom I have been with for over 16 years. While working with Aflac, I have been blessed to have held several positions including: Sales Associate, State Training Coordinator (NC,SC,FL), District Sales Coordinator and Trainer at our Aflac’s World Wide Headquarters in Columbia Ga. I am currently a member of our local, state and National Association of Health Underwriters.

I attend St Andrews Catholic Church. When I lived in Statesville I attended Western Avenue Baptist Church (my childhood church) where I am still a member.

I held several positions there which included: President of the Women’s Missionary Union, Toddler, Children and Young Adult Sunday School teacher, and was active in the Adult Choir and the Drama Team. I was voted Woman of the Year for the Baptist Women’s Union 1989.

I also hold the rank of 1st Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.

I began shag dancing with my Twin Sister, Brenda, in Statesville, NC in 1996. While in Statesville I held numerous positions in the Statesville Shag Club including President. In September of 2001, I won the mixed Doubles Contest with Larry Davis, at the OD Arcade.

I have been a member of the OD Shag Club for over 7 years and have served as Entertainment and Decorating Co-Chair for 2 years. I chaired the Golf Cart Fundraiser  in 2014 and assisted in the Golf Cart Fundraiser in 2013. I am currently serving as Advertising Co-Chair this year and help organized and Co-Chair the OD Shag Club Dance Demo Team for the past 3 years. I enjoy volunteering when I can to help

Serve at brunches, clean sweeps, sell 50/50 tickets, give the blessing, etc.

I would try to bring my talents to the OD shag club as one of your board members from preserving the dance itself to promoting our Club to the highest level.

Beth Cornwell – Treasurer

DSCN4010I have been a member of the OD Shag Club for three years, joining soon after my husband and I moved here from Charlotte. We previously had been members of Boppers Shag Club in Charlotte for many years. For the past year I have served as chairperson of the ways and means committee where I have met many members of the club and have been able to work with the club’s board members. You’ve probably seen me at club events and SOS selling t-shirts and other club merchandise.   I was pleased to be nominated for the office of treasurer and look forward to fulfilling this responsibility.

In my personal life, my husband, Joe, and I are parents of 3 children and grandparents to 6. We greatly enjoy being retired and living here at the beach. I retired from the field of education after 36 years, with the majority of those years spent teaching mathematics and seven of these years as an assistant principal in a middle school. During my college years, I served as treasurer of my sorority, giving me a little experience for this office. I appreciate the nomination for treasurer and look forward to the challenge.

North Myrtle Beach Donation 2014

The OD Shag Club board in keeping with our goal to promote the Shag decided to donate a 28” TV/ DVD combo and a shag dance video to the North Myrtle Beach Historical Museum. The museum had a corner dedicated to Shag Dancing but nothing to really explain what it was. Monica Powell worked with Chuck Stokes of Stage Videos to produce a video during our November party at Duck’s. The video included all ages and stages of the dance, as well as shag history and music. Our demo dance team, four Jr. Shaggers, other members of the shag club and The National Shag Dance Champion entry were all featured. Monica Powell, Wendy Schultz, Karen Young, Peggy Christie and Paulette Broadway made the presentation to Jenean Todd, museum Director.

Our annual Nominations Party was held at Fat Harold’s on Saturday, August 22. We had a great crowd, great food and some fun entertainment! Many, many thanks to the Food Committee chaired by Donnie Schultz and Faye Chowning. Donnie and his team sweated over a pit cooking barbeque for everyone and it was fantastic!

On to the nominations, the following people were nominated for officers and board members for 2016:

Board Members:         Linda Campbell, Vic Gillespie, Jerry Harrell, and Laura Hardy

Treasurer:                  Beth Cornwell

Secretary:                  Tina Tomberlin

Vice-President:        Bill Bacon, Terry McCoy

President:                 Monica Powell

During the party, we played musical dancers. It was a lot like musical chairs except when the music stopped, you left your dance partner and grabbed a new one from the audience. I am not sure when I have ever seen so many people in the OD Shag Club dancing and having a great time! I know that I danced with several people that I have never had the opportunity to dance with before and it was a lot of fun! Thank you Kathy and Deborah for such a great idea for entertainment!

At the end of the party, we drew for nametag winners, logo winners and 50/50. Bill Bacon won $20 for logo wear. He was sporting a great-embroidered shirt, which he purchased through our OD Shag Club store! Pat Harris won $20 for wearing her nametag. Terry Jensen won the 50/50. Drinks were not on her for the rest of the night much to our sorrow! Way to go Bill, Pat and Terry!

Friday, August 21, 2015, the Ocean Drive Shag Club went on their annual Cruise to nowhere on the Hurricane Fleet out of Calabash, NC. Around 90 of the 100 guests who had signed up showed up with their rain gear and umbrellas to brave the stormy weather. Even though we had to huddle on the inside of the boat, we were pretty wet by the time we arrived back in port. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves socializing, eating all the food they wanted, and trying to stay dry.

Thanks are extended to Lou Garrenton, Rich and Karen Young, and Fritz Eckhardt for their assistance in helping make this function the success that it was. Also, we would like to thank the Hurricane Fleet for making this cruise possible with their excellent cruising expertise.

I wish to thank all of you 2015 “Nowhere Cruisers” for attending our annual event. Despite the changing weather conditions, we found that being “nowhere” brought us “somewhere”……..”together”. Again, sharing good times with each of you was what it was all about.
