OD Shag Club Thanksgiving Party
O.D. Shag Club Thanksgiving Party
By Peggy Christie
The location of the November party was Duck’s Beach Club, where 230 members and 7 guests enjoyed a bountiful Thanksgiving feast. Heidi Cross did another excellent job planning the meal – thanks to her and her helpers for keeping the food flowing and the tables replenished. Thanks also to all the members who contributed side dishes and delicious desserts for the party and to the Hospitality Committee for keeping things moving at the check-in table.
If you wanted to do some early Christmas shopping, Tina Tomberlin was selling club logo merchandise at reduced prices – some items were a real steal. If you missed it, the men’s camp shirt, with embroidered logo, is now available in light blue, in addition to red or black. I know many of the men will want to have one of these shirts to wear during parties and SOS or on their next cruise!
Several Jr. SOS dancers and members of the O.D. Shag Club Dance Team were invited to perform at the party. A DVD of their dancing was made and will be presented to the North Myrtle Beach Historical Museum, so visitors to the museum can learn about the shag, South Carolina’s state dance. Thanks to Monica Powell for making the arrangements for the dancing to be filmed.
Larry Allen and Bob Sanders were selected to receive special recognition. Larry served as the club’s webmaster for 8 years, during which time he was responsible for maintaining and updating the website; a huge job and important responsibility. To express our appreciation, Larry was presented with a plaque, acknowledging his dedication and commitment to the club. Bob has served as president and treasurer of the club and was selected as the 2014 recipient of the Al Cain Award. “The recipient of this award is someone that has contributed above and beyond the call of duty to help the club in whatever way they can and that volunteers his time whenever possible”.
Steve Zoller was the lucky winner of the 50/50 drawing, walking away with $191 and Beth Cornwell’s name was drawn as the nametag winner. Before ending the evening, President Karen Young introduced the new and current members of the board.
It was good to see everyone out on the dance floor working off all that food. I had a great time and I hope you did too.
As a special recognition: The OD Shag Club would like to award this plaque to Larry Allen for his many years of dedication to the OD Shag Club as Web Master. Larry built our website and maintained it, putting in many long hours to keep it up to date. The Club appreciates all the time and effort that he put into making our website a useful tool for club business. As the plaque states: “He served us well!”
