John Martin, Candidate For President
My name is John Martin. I am honored to announce that I am running for President of the OD Shag Club. I am currently serving on the Board of Directors.
My wife Sue and I have been Co-Chairs of the Golf Cart Fundraiser for the last two years. We have participated in the St. Patrick’s Day, SOS, and Christmas parades. We have worked the check-in tables at the Charity Fun Run the last two years. We have worked as volunteers at the Charity Golf Tournament. We have participated in the Myrtle Manor Christmas party.
I have a BS Degree in Construction Engineering from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Masters Degree in Construction Management from Western Carolina University. I retired as a Senior Project Manager after 42 years in the industrial construction industry. I am a former President of the River Run HOA in Reidsville, NC.
Going forward, I would like to continue the club’s perpetuation of the dance, our shag culture, and our association with the junior shaggers and Junior SOS.
I look forward to continued service with the club.

A Little about Me
I appreciate being nominated for the position of Vice President for ODSC. I plan to work diligently and serve the club to the best of my ability. I have served as Secretary for the ODSC this year and last year. This opportunity gave me great insight into the operations of this club.
I am a Carolina girl spending my youth in Orangeburg, SC and learned to shag dance at an early age from my dad and mom. They met while dancing and were known for their talents. Shag Dancing is in my blood.
I raised my beautiful family in Rock Hill, SC. I have two children, a son and a daughter, and one granddaughter who is attending the College of Charleston. They all have a great appreciation and a love of music. I moved to Ocean Drive in 2013 to dance and enjoy beach life. It is truly Paradise.
I majored in Business Education at Winthrop University and taught high school business classes for 36 years in Lancaster, SC; York, SC and Charlotte, NC. I also enjoyed working with adults at York Technical College and Winthrop University. While living in Rock Hill, SC I received my MAT degree and MEd degree from Winthrop. I also achieved National Board Certification.
The old commercial about “Stay in School” was true for me. I have a passion for helping others and I believe in lifelong learning.
My hobbies include traveling and dancing. Reading and walking on the beach is a favorite pastime.

Monica Powell, Candidate For Secretary
I am very pleased and honored to run for Secretary of the OD Shag Club.
We joined the ODSC after moving to NMB in 2012. Prior to the move, we lived in Charlotte, NC and were members of the Monroe Shag Club from 1997-2014. While being a member of the Monroe Shag Club, I served as President, Vice President and Secretary. I also received the Monroe Shag Club Go-Getter Award and the Monroe Shag Club Icon Award. I was the co-chair of the SOS Parade Committee for 5 years.
After becoming a member of the OD Shag Club, I have served on various committees and worked many a booth for the club. I served the ODSC as:

I retired from Wachovia in Charlotte as a Senior Vice President. I have attended many ACSC events and meetings and have always admired how much participation there is by the ODSC. I am very glad to be a member of this club and will work hard to ensure I help maintain and grow all the wonderful events and help with new events for this great club.

As a current Board member of the Ocean Drive Shag Club, I would like to once again serve another 2 years in this position of Board member.
As a club member over the past years, I have served as Board Member, assisting in winning the past 3 years SOS spring safari float contests by assisting in the design and build as well as participating on the floats. I have volunteered and directed games at the Ocean Drive Shag Club Charity Golf tournaments, participated in the Fun Runs, Golf cart raffle sales, and many other events.
Ocean Drive Shag Club is family to me and I want to serve in this position in hopes of contributing to whatever is needed to promote the club, the dance and the music in whatever means I can.

Connie Livingston, Candidate For At Large Board Of Directors
When my husband was retiring in we looked at several places, but North Myrtle Beach was the best fit for us. We became members and jumped right in to an active lifestyle. I was the ways and means co-chairperson for a couple of years . I have been in every SOS parade and several of the St. Patrick’s day and Christmas parades. I co-chaired the parade committee for two years. I’ve also been involved with entertaining at Myrtle Manor for several years . I have served on the board several times and I hope I’ve been an inspiration for others . This club has been very involved in our community and I’ll help to continue that tradition.
Adele Robey, Candidate for At Large Board of Directors
Adele Robey is an (almost) lifelong Washingtonian, now into her second year as a full time resident of Cherry Grove. Family summers always included a trip south, and in 1989 she and her late husband bought a little beach house in Cherry Grove. Growing up she loved watching shag dancers at the corner pavilions and had a lifelong desire to learn. That opportunity finally came many years later when a dear friend and well-known shagger invited her to the Northern Virginia Shag Club. She danced with them for several years, served on their board and was and instructor for the beginner classes. She continues to be a member there and creates the monthly newsletter, Shag Rag to this day.
Adele is a professional graphic designer and theater professional and continues to work in both fields. Since she moved here, she has enjoyed meeting and working with the OD Shag Club members on two floats, a rained-out Christmas parade and a couple of dance performances for the parade and for the Myrtle Beach Manor folks. (The costume from the rained-out parade is being saved for this year.)
A lifelong (chronic) volunteer she has served on several on-profit arts- and education-oriented boards and help found others. She firmly believes that whatever your talent is, you have an obligation to share it for the good of the whole. Besides, it feels good when you do.
Sue Wehner, Candidate for At Large Board of Directors
I have been a member of ODSC since 2019. I served for 5 years as co-chair of Ways & Means, 1 year as Hospitality chair, 2 years as co-chair for the Sunset Cruise and 1 term as a Director.
I grew up in Maryland and graduated from UofM, College Park. After 5 moves in 12 years we ended up in Raleigh where I earned my Real Estate Brokers License and sold for 16 years. Moving to Wilmington I switched my real estate focus to the education sector and became certified by the NC Real Estate Commission to teach their courses and ultimately had a real estate school. In 2018 I moved to Myrtle Beach and finally retired.
With over 600 members our club is one of the largest! I have been excited to see many new members step up on our committees and get involved. The growth of our club relies on maintaining our integrity and growth and as a Board member I will strive to continue this growth and enhance relationships.
