Yes the weatherman predicted there was an 80 to 100% chance of rain, which would deter anyone that didn’t want to get wet to stay home. However, those of us that defied the odds of nature had a dry and hot day at the corn hole tournament Saturday June 27, 2015 at 4pm at Swillie’s Bar and Grill.
Approximately 30 members of the OD Shag Club showed up for this event. It did not rain and we all enjoyed the fellowship and watching the corn hole tournament.
A few members brought appetizers so we had finger food and drinks from the bar. Tootie Brown was the DJ inside.
The tournament directed by Terry McCoy began around 4PM with Terry taking names to enter the tournament. He came up with 4 teams. This was a double elimination tournament.
The winners of the tournament were Terry McCoy and Lou Martino. Although it was an intimate gathering of members it was discussed that we try to have more get togethers throughout the remainder of the year.
DANCING AT THE PELICAN’S GAME

It was a blistering day at 89 degrees. The weatherman said we were supposed to have 50% chance of rain. Nonetheless the OD Shag Club Demo dancers and their supporters trickled up to will-call window to pick up their tickets to watch the Pelican’s double-header. We had 25 OD Shag club members in attendance. We were seated in section E between home plate and third base. It was hot until we got acclimated to the weather and it did not rain.
The first game was scheduled for 7 innings. We were to dance between the first and second game. The bottom of the sixth inning the Demo Dancers got up to take their places. Hanna escorted us to the staging area. While waiting to dance Hanna said that she would like to learn how to Shag. So we took time to show her how to shag. She was a quick learner.
We were supposed to dance on the dug out but Todd allowed us to dance on the field on the walkway to the pitchers mound. There were four couples dancing: Wade Kirdahi and Joyce Girling; Lou Martino and Linda Campbell on the left side of the pitchers mound and James Thorndyke and Cherie Patalik and Randy Overby and Laura Harde dancing on the right side of the pitchers mound. We only had the opportunity to dance one song (Back in The Day Café), because there was too much going on: it was girls scout night, Boy Scout night, with many other activities for the fans.
We all had a great time!!
I would like to thank the demo dancers and the club members that came out to support us: Bill and Donna Althoff, Ron and Glenda Bjorklund, Fritz and Helen Eckhart, Terry and Shelia Erford, Barbara Hopper, Bob and Kathy Sanders, Wendy and Donnie Schultz, Debra Spellman, Diane Tindall and Rudy and Anita Wooten.
I would also like to that Todd, Hanna and the Pelican’s for giving the OD Shag Club the opportunity to perform and promote the shag dance at their June 6th double header.
Hope everyone had a wonderful month of May and Memorial Day!!

We are now selling Fun Monday Tickets and as a member of A.C.S.C., we need to support this event. The Fun Monday drawing was started as a way to finance the events of Fun Monday. The drawing generates the income that pays for all the activities. There is no charge for people to attend the events of Fun Monday. It only takes you $10.00 to make you eligible to be in the drawing. The first ticket drawn wins $7,500, the second wins $2,000, the third wins $1,000, the fourth wins $500, and the fifth and final ticket wins $ 250. After all the bills are paid there is a donation made to Caring For Kids which is the chosen charity for the Fun Monday Enhancement Committee. The Caring for Kids charity is a great organization that helps a lot of kids. There are 100 tickets dispersed to each shag club that attends the A.C.S.C meeting at the spring S.O.S. The representative that receives the tickets then takes the tickets back to the club for the members to buy or sell all the tickets. If you would like to have a chance at winning, please contact me by email.
We lost a great man on May 22, 2015, our Fat Man. Harold Bessent started the OD Shag Club in 1982 and he was a great supporter of the club, shag dancing and beach music until the day he passed. Words cannot express how much he will be missed. A Celebration of Life will be held at Fat Harold’s Beach Club will be held on June 13th at 4pm.
