It was a fine evening to be inside or outside at Swillies Hideaway in North Myrtle Beach on May 16, as evidenced by the number of golf carts and cars that filled the parking lot and street.
The club provided all of the food and fixings for 164 members and 10 guests who enjoyed a cookout of hamburgers and hotdogs. Thanks to our grillmasters, things moved along smoothly and everyone had plenty to eat. After dinner, the cornhole tournament quickly got underway, with lots of enthusiastic party people tossing bean bags back and forth, trying to get them to land in the hole or on the board to score. Finally, after elimination of all of the other teams, Debbie and Bill emerged as the winners!
John Tilton was the lucky winner of the 50/50 drawing, graciously donating half of his winnings back to the club, while Grover Godwin’s name was drawn as the nametag winner. Bill Bacon, looking good in one of the club’s dress camp shirts in light blue, won the prize for logo apparel. These good looking shirts come in red, black, light blue or crème, and if you don’t have one yet, Beth Cornwell, Ways & Means Committee Chair, will be happy to order one for you.
While many people continued to mingle and socialize outside until dark, a crowd also gathered on the dance floor to shag the night way. I had a great time and I hope you did too.

Ladies and Gentlemen! Children of All Ages! Come one; come all to see the Greatest Show on Sand (SOS). See the caravan of animals and all that’s strange! See what’s under the big top! See the clowns! See our vendors! That was the cry from our Ring Master as the O.D. Shag Club rolled out for the 2015 SOS Spring Safari Parade.
What a spectacle it was! Our circus theme was nothing short of awesome. As always the O.D. Shag Club put on a great show for all the spectators who lined the streets and braved the uncertain weather to watch the annual parade. While it rained earlier in the morning as we were making final preparations to our float, when the Parade began to roll down Main Street the rain stopped. Can’t rain on our Parade!!
Please make sure you check out the pictures from the parade that are posted on our website. When you do you will see evidence of what a talented group of members we have. The golf cart transformations and costumes were so creative; you could tell the thought and effort put into it by each and every one!
A big thank you to our Parade Chairperson Billy Powell, his assistant Monica Powell and everyone on the committee for all the planning and hard work they put into making this annual event a success. And what a success it was…..once again the O.D. Shag Club took home 1st Place in the Best Troupe category.
Congratulations to everyone who participated and spent their Saturday afternoon “just clowning around!” View Photos

Hope everyone who attended enjoyed the OD Shag Club Brunch that was held on Sunday, April 19th at the OD Arcade and Lounge. We had a wonderful turnout and it was nice to see all those smiling faces so early in the morning. The Hospitality and Food Committee did a good job moving the lines as quick as possible. They make a great team!! Ways and Means were selling 50/50 tickets, congrats to Lou Garrenton for being the winner of the drawing.
My family and I moved to North Myrtle Beach from Charlotte in August of 2001. We did not know anyone, so we joined the OD Shag Club in 2002 and we were taken in like family. We tried to attend as many parties as we could but we really started getting involved as the kids got older.
My first commitment was the hospitality committee in 2007, then continued with volunteering at the Clean Sweeps and Junior SOS. I have only missed two Board Meetings since 2007 and attended six ACSC Workshops since 2010. I have been Parade Chair since 2009 and also served as your Vice President this year.
I am honored to except the nomination for President and vow to have only the best interest of the Club and it’s members at all time throughout the year.
My name is Linda Benfield Campbell. I currently reside in North Myrtle Beach relocating here from Columbia SC in 2010. I am originally from Statesville, NC and am currently employed with Aflac as a Sales Associate. While working with Aflac, I have held several positions including State Training Coordinator for NC, SC, and Florida, District Sales Coordinator in NC, SC, and Florida and Training Manager at Aflac’s World Wide Headquarters in Columbus, Ga. I am currently a Delegate for the Grand Strand Pee Dee Chapter of the National Association of Health Underwriters.
I attend St Andrews Catholic Church. While I was in Statesville, I held many positions within Western Avenue Baptist Church where I am still an active member. Those positions included: President of the Women’s Missionary Union, Toddler, Children and Young Adult Sunday School teacher, and was active in the Adult Choir and the Drama Team. I had the honor of being voted Woman of the Year for the Women’s Missionary Union in 1989.
I began shag dancing with my Twin Sister, Brenda, in Statesville, NC in 1996. While in Statesville I was a member of several shag clubs, and I held numerous positions within the Statesville Shag Club including Secretary, Vice President. I also chaired Entertainment/Decorating and Ways and Means committees. In September of 2001, I won the mixed Doubles Contest during SOS with Larry Davis.
I am no stranger to dance but more importantly I love to promote and preserve the dance. I dance at least 2-3 nights a week at Fat Harold’s. During this time I am either dancing or enjoy talking about my love for the dance, by getting others involved in the dance and our club.
I have been a member of the OD Shag club for 2 years. I have been the Entertainment/Decorating Co-Chair for these past 2 years and have also chaired the Vacation Giveaway Fundraiser 2013 and the Golf Cart Fundraiser this year. I have enjoyed presenting the club with what I hope is the best of the best entertainment. I am also a member of the dance team and thus promoting the shag dance to anyone who wants to learn. I have also assisted teaching the dance with Jeppy McDowell at his free classes on Tuesday night at Fat Harold’s.
I would bring my talents to the OD shag club as your next Vice President from preserving the dance itself to most importantly promoting our Club to the highest level.
I am honored to be Secretary for the OD Shag Club for 2014. We have participated in the 3 parades this year as the Grinch at Christmas, leprechauns at the St. Patrick’s parade and the “cute ass” during the SOS parade. We have also sold 50/50 tickets, golf cart tickets and worked with the Ways and Means Committee this year.
We have had a home in NMB since 1988 and spent quite a bit of time in the area. My husband and I sold our home in Weddington, NC and moved to North Myrtle Beach full time in 2012. One of the first things we did was join the OD Shag Club. We have been members of the Monroe Shag Club for many years and understand and appreciate the camaraderie of being a member of a vibrant shag club.
As a member of the Monroe Shag Club, I served in the following capacities:
• Vice President
• Secretary – 2 years
• Membership Chairperson
• Toys for Tots Chairperson – 5 years
• SOS Parade Co-Chair – 5 years
• Shaggin’ for Dollars Chairperson – 7 years
• Participated on Ways and Means and Decorating Committees
The annual charity event, “Shaggin’ for Dollars” raised over $300,000 for local charities. It is a one night event with a silent auction, live auction and show with over 350 attendees.
I am a retired Senior Vice President with Wachovia and managed over 700 associates including a call center. We have one son, Joshua, who lives in Charlotte.
I have attended many ACSC events and have always admired how much participation there is by the OD Shag Club and how much fun everyone seems to have with each other. I am very pleased to be a member of this club and will work hard to ensure I help maintain and grow all the wonderful events and attributes of the OD Shag Club.
Currently I am serving as your Chairperson of the Ways and Means Committee and have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity it has given me to meet so many of our members.
After moving here in October 2012 my husband Sonny and I joined the O. D. Shag in November that same year. We of course knew of the O.D. Shag Club due to our involvement in the Monroe Shag Club for 14 years and by attending many ACSC meetings. We were happy to be able to join a club that was as dedicated to the preservation of the Shag and all it encompasses. During my years as a member of the Monroe Shag Club I served in the following capacities:
President, Vice-President, Secretary, Board of Directors, Ways and Means Chairperson, Social Chairperson, SOS Parade Chairperson, Shaggin’ for Dollars Co-Chairperson (our annual charity fundraiser), Decorating Committee Chairperson
While living in the Monroe, NC area I was employed as the Complex Human Resources Manager at Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation, the world’s second largest poultry producer. Sonny and I have 3 children and 7 grandchildren.
I am very pleased to be a member of the O.D. Shag Club and hope that through your votes I can continue to serve the club.
I have been a member of the OD Shag club for almost 21 years. I have served on many committees during these years including
Co-Chairman of Entertainment and Decorations for two years.
Before retiring I owned a computer programming business for over 30 years, specializing in custom accounting applications. I have been an accountant for over 40 years, and am still doing corporate and individual taxes .
In have been your treasurer for the past year and have enjoyed working for our club.
I would appreciate your vote.
I was born in Brooklyn, NY and attended NY schools. Following graduation from high school, I enlisted in the US Army, attended Officer’s Candidate School and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. In 1944, I landed on Normandy on D-Day and earned the Bronze and Silver Stars for gallantry in action. After being wounded, I was evacuated to England, then assigned to SHAEF ( Supreme Headquarters) in the Psychological Warfare Branch, where I continued to serve until I returned to the United States in 1946 to attend college, receiving a BS Degree from New York University in 2 1/2 years and a MA from Columbia University in 8 months.
While in the service, I attended many training schools and worked in a variety of positions, retiring from the Army in 1963 as a Lieutenant Colonel after 23 years of service.
After retiring from the military I worked as an Assistant High School Principal in New York state (3 years) and a High School Principal (8 years) and for the state of Pennsylvania as a High School Principal (6 years) and an Assistant Superintendent of Schools (3 years).
Following retirement from the school system, I moved to Baltimore, Maryland. During the next 14 years, I worked as a Sailing Teacher in Chesapeake Bay, Maryland (summers) and as a Charter Captain in the Caribbean, Virgin Islands (winters). I love dancing and won 4 championships as a Country Line Dancer in 1996 and came in 5th in the World Championships in the Netherlands in 2002.
I moved to Myrtle Beach in February 2007 and started Shag dancing in April 2007. As a member of the shag club I participated with the Entertainment Committee doing singing, dancing and drama presentations. I have also been involved with the Charity Golf Tournament and currently am one of the members of the OD Shag Club Dance Team.
I have 6 children, 13 Grandchildren, 4 Great-Grandchildren and had 2 wives who passed away and I have hundreds of friends. Most people have good days and bad days. I don’t! I have good days and great days!!! My motto is, “Anything you can Perceive, you can Achieve” and I would be honored to represent the club as a member of the Board.
I am a native of South Carolina, born in Clover, where I attended school and graduated from Clover High. Shortly after graduating I joined the army. After serving in Vietnam for two years, I returned home, met Linda, and married her in 1972. At night I attended college courses on the GI Bill and received a BA in Business Administration. In 1978, Linda and I had our daughter and raised her in Clover. I worked for 34 years in the textile machine repair business until most of the mills closed. After that, I worked in Charlotte for several years until we decided we wanted to move to the beach. Linda and I are both retired and feel that we have made our home in paradise.
We have been members of the OD Shag club for about 9 years. During that time, I have enjoyed the fun and fellowship and have met many wonderful people. I try to participate in all the meetings, and I have worked selling golf cart tickets, OD Shag clothing, and 50/50 tickets. I have decorated my golf cart for the parades and helped with many other club activities. I look forward to serving you on the board.
My name is Terry McCoy and I have been nominated to serve on the OD Shag Club Board of Directors. I have been active in shag for most of my adult life. I am from Camden and moved to the North Myrtle Beach last year, but I have been coming on weekends for 9 years. As a member of several Shag Clubs, I feel that I have many attributes to enhance the direction of the OD Shag Club.
While living in the Camden area, I was a member of the Camden /Lugoff Shag Club for 20 years, 12 of those years I served on the Board of Directors and in 2009 I served as President for a period of 4 years. I am proud to say that I did receive the ICON Award in 2012. As a member of the shag world, not only have I kept myself abreast of what is going on by attending the SOS/ACSC Meetings for the last 6 years, I have also volunteered on the ACSC Enhancement Committee.
My wife and I have been members of the OD Shag Club for five years and enjoy dancing at all the clubs in the area. I believe in promoting and preserving the shag dance with my experience by participating in the administration of the shag a well as the dance itself.
I would appreciate your vote!!

I am honored to have been nominated to run for a position on the board. My father was in the military and we moved around a lot, so it’s difficult to pick one place to call home. Tim and I have been married for 37 years and have a daughter and two grandsons. We moved to North Myrtle Beach in 1997, when Tim retired after 20 years in the military. We joined the club in 1998 and since then I have served as Chairman of the Hospitality Committee (2 years), member of Hospitality Committee (3 years), Chairman of the Decorating Committee (2 years), and member of the Entertainment Committee (3 years). In addition, I was a member of the Board of Directors from 2011-2012 and received the Al Cain Award in 2012. I have also helped on the golf tournament, checking in the golfers and was the beverage cart girl last year, which I love doing. I haven’t missed many parades and a lot of my friends call me the PPP (Professional Parade Person). I will do anything for this club if asked and I love doing the Clean Sweep when I can. I have to say the best thing that we have ever done was to join the OD Shag Club, before that, I was pretty shy. I have met the nicest people in the club and would enjoy being elected to the Board again.
ODSC Poker Run
We had a great turnout for the Poker Run last weekend and the weather was beautiful.
Due to Hillside being closed, we were not able to make it to JC Lounge, so the OD Arcade was our first 2 stops. Then we went to Boardwalk Billy’s and after that went to Fat Harold’s. Everyone had a wonderful time and this was how it all played out…
52 Mulligans were sold
15 people drew Jokers and instantly received their entry money back.
1st Place Jon Holtzclaw won $500 with 59
2nd Place Frank Costanzo won $200 with 58
Low Hand $300 went to Tina Tomberlin with a 10
Wendy Schultz won $270 from the 50/50
Camp Kemo to receive $271 from the 50/50
We gave away numerous money envelopes with $25 and $50 cash and we had prizes donated at each stop. We also had prizes donated by Archie Anderson with Coca-Cola, Kay Anderson with First Citizens Bank, Frances Rogers with NBSC and Ronnie Rogers with Tomlinson’s.
We need a big thanks to Jim Queen, Paul Harrison, Wanda Queen and Susan Harrell, along with all the other volunteers that made this happen for us. Great job guys, we had a blast!!
20140720 Junior SOS Brunch
The Jr. SOS brunch was a success as usual due to the efforts of many of our club members. We served 116 Jr. Shaggers and 112 members of their families for a total of 228. We had 20 breakfast casseroles, biscuits and gravy and fruit, which were donated and served by club members. The club purchased breakfast sandwiches and donuts. Fat Harold’s donated the orange juice. Forty-one of our members donated their time to help with the event.
Heidi Cross and Jenean Todd did a wonderful job organizing and setting up the event. Everyone that helped serve looked great in the OD Shag Club logo aprons. Many of the Jr. Shaggers and their families expressed their appreciation for the brunch as they went through the line.
Before the gospel hour, Karen Young, President of the OD Shag Club plus officers and members of the board, Wendy Schultz, Monica Powell, Lou Garrenton, Lou Martino, Peggy Christie, Paulette Broadway and Bill Bacon, presented a check for $500 to Gene Pope, President of Jr. SOS, to help promote the shag dance for future generations.
Thanks also to Linda Campbell who gave the blessing before the meal and with the help of Lou Martino set up a golf cart fund-raising booth at the front of Fat Harold’s and sold 55 golf cart tickets during the event.
Update: Jenean and Heidi say many thanks to those who helped serve the food at the last party. It went so well, so smoothly and everyone had a great time. Couldn’t have done it without you!
Saturday night, June 21, 2014 the OD Shag Club celebrated our liberty with a “Salute to the Troops” wearing red, white and blue.
Karen Young welcomed new members and introduced the evening. Then she turned the evening over to Linda Campbell, entertainment co-chair. The 1776 Drum and Fife Crop (Lou Martino, Dickey Garrenton and Lenny Gardner) marched into the club to the song “Yankee Doodle” and presented the flag. We pledged our allegiance to the flag and sang along to the Star Spangled Banner sung by Kevin Harrell.
After the blessing by Linda Campbell, we had dinner. No one went away hungry because subs, wraps, potato salad, chips and cookies were served.
Over 50 OD Shag Club Veterans were introduced and recognized for their service to our country. As each veterans name and picture was presented on a power point presentation we listened to Military Medley of all the services.
“Bob Hope” (Bill Rowland) emceed our USO show. The Andrew Sisters (Linda Campbell, Connie Williams and Lou Garrenton sang to the bugle boy Lou Martino “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B”), Miss America (Michelle Rowland) of 1969 made an appearance with Bob Hope, Dolly Parton (Debbie Schmitt) and Kenny Rogers (Brian Schmitt) sang “Islands in the Stream”; Elvis Presley (Jon Holsclow) sang his Famous “Trilogy”. And finally Lee Greenwood (Lou Martino) sang “God Bless the USA” as the entire club sang along as they waved American Flags. Thanks to these members for their participation and talent.
And a Special thanks to Jammin’ Jimmy B and his wife Bobbie for playing awesome music for the event and thru out the night!
