Hello again 0.0. Shag Club members and welcome to July, 2019. July 4th is almost here and with it come all the tourists that make it possible for us to have so many of the amenities that we take for granted, like seven grocery stores, numerous great restaurants and bars, and more golf courses than you can count. Of course, all those tourists also come with a down side, like more cars than our streets and highways can handle! One of those cars attempted to turn right off U.S. 17 into Aldi from a middle lane without looking and crashed into our daughter’s car which our daughter was driving and my wife and granddaughter were passengers. Fortunately, we don’t think anyone was hurt, but it is really going to be difficult for our daughter and her 2 children to get back to Wisconsin in time for the two grandchildren to play in two all-star games, softball and baseball, and also get to summer camp. Oh, and the only Infiniti dealer is in Charleston, so nobody in Horry County stocks any parts to fix her car! Of course, the body shops are like most other businesses that don’t rely on tourists and will be closed for a good part of this week. Not to even mention that our daughter and her family are moving to Georgia this summer and are in the process of trying to sell one house in Wisconsin and buy another one in Georgia! But if they can somehow manage to make it through this summer it will really be nice for them to only be 5 hours away instead of 15!
We don’t usually have a party where food is served in July, but we do have our Charity Fun Run which will be on Saturday July 27, at 1:00 p.m. If you have never come to this, you don’t know how much fun this can be! Remember we are not running but riding! You can use any kind of conveyance you want to use: car, golf cart, horse and buggy, motorcycle. Just so long as you have a designated driver!! As usual, we will begin at the 00 Arcade and end up at Fat Harold’s. I hope to see as many of you there as possible!
On Sunday, July 21st we will be serving our Junior 50S Breakfast in the Backroom of Fat Harold’s.
We really need for as many of you as possible to bring casseroles and other breakfast foods to this event. It begins at 10:00 a.m. and we need to have the food there earlier than that to get everything set up. The young shaggers and their parents really enjoy this event and usually get a very inspirational message after they have eaten!
Don’t forget Beginner Shag II lessons in the Backroom of Fat Harold’s on Wednesday July 10 at 6:00 p.m.
I look forward to seeing you at these events!
My name is Vickie Parsons, and it is with great pleasure that I announce my desire to run for the office of Treasurer of the OD Shag Club.
I’m currently a resident of Shallotte, NC after relocating from Asheboro, NC in 1984. I’m fortunate to work for the Dunes Club in Myrtle Beach as their Administrative/Accounting Assistant, and just celebrated my 20th year of employment.
I have been a member of the OD Shag Club for 12 years. In my earlier years, I served on the Entertainment Committee and Membership Hospitality Committee. Also, back in the day I was responsible for the actual mailing to over 700 members the monthly newsletter. This was accomplished with the help of Phil and Mimi Benedict and Paul and Vickie Harrison. Most recently, I served on the SOS Spring Safari Parade committee and volunteered my time as needed.
Music and dance has been a passion of mine since a very young age. As a young person, my beach/shagging fun was experienced in Carolina/Kure Beach and not until 1998 did I experience the wonderful shagging life in N. Myrtle Beach and the OD Shag Club.
If given the opportunity, I will serve as your Treasurer with honor and integrity and continue to preserve with everyone else the dance we all love. . . . “The Shag”
Camp Kemo during Fat Harold’s Fundraiser. Camp Kemo is a camp for children with cancer and their families. For these kids it may be a brief moment of joy in a life that has its share of pain and fear, and the week-long camp can provide them with a normal childhood experience.

I have been nominated to serve as President of the OD Shag Club. I have been active in the shag world for most of my adult life. I am from Camden, SC. I moved to the beach in 2013. As a member of several shag clubs I feel that I have many attributes to enhance the direction of the OD Shag Club. While living in Camden/Lugoff area I was a member of the class shag club for 20 years. In 2008/2011, I served as President of the Camden/Lugoff shag club for a period of 4 years. I also severed on the same club’s board for a period of 12 years. I am proud to say that I did receive the icon award in 2012. As a member of the shag world not only have I kept myself abreast of what is going on by attending the SOS/ACSC meetings for the last 6 years? I also share on the ACSC enhancement committee! I served as Vice President of the OD Shag Club 2015 and the Enhancement Committee 2015. My wife Kathy and I have been a member of the OD Shag Club for 4 years. We enjoy dancing at all the clubs in this area and enjoy being with the locals on Wednesday night at Fat Harold’s. I believe in promoting and preserving the shag dance with my experience by participating in the administration of the shag as well as demonstrating the shag dance itself. I would appreciate your vote.

Hi, my name is Dale Hicks. I moved to North Myrtle Beach in 2009 after I retired as the Executive Assistant for a non-profit organization in the Richmond, Virginia area. I have served as president, treasurer and recording secretary for a woman’s club in Richmond, as well as president and recording secretary of Beta Sigma Phi, an international women’s philanthropic sorority, in Richmond and North Myrtle Beach. I accepted the nomination as recording secretary as a way to become more active in the OD Shag Club and because I feel certain, with my experience, I can do an excellent job. I would appreciate your vote.

We have been members of the Monroe Shag Club for many years and understand and appreciate the camaraderie of being a member of vibrant shag club.
As a member of the Monroe Shag Club, I served in the following capacities:
• President
• Vice President
• SOS Parade Chair – 5 years
• Ways & Means Chairperson
• Chairman of the Monroe Shag Club Foundation
• Vice-Chairman of the Monroe Shag Club Foundation

Your vote would certainly be appreciated and should I be elected it would be an honor to continue to serve such a wonderful club!!
The November Dance Class on November 12, 2019 at 6pm IS in the backroom of Fat Harold’s.
For those of us who have been blessed to live on or near North Myrtle Beach, the Shag dance and beach music have been ingrained in our hearts and souls. I grew up near Loris, only a few short miles form the Ocean Drive section of NMB. At an early age, my brother Tommy would sneak me into concerts to see groups, like The Drifters: The Tams and The Swinging Medallions, I was immediately hooked and my love affair with the Shag and its music was born.
After graduating form Green Sea High, I went to Horry Georgetown Tech with an associated degree in Secretarial Science. I am a member of the Loris Garden Club. I was soon married to Lewis Hardee and we reared three successful children. Although I have worked 29 years at the Clerk of Court Office at the Conway Court House, I have never forgotten my love of the Shag and its importance to our beloved beach. In 2012, I joined the O D Shag Club and have recently decided to campaign for a position on Board of Directors of the amazing group. The Shag Club is as important to me as breathing and I will be a positive example for our club members and future members. It is my goal to preserve this institution carry on its integrity and provide future generations with the opportunity to experience this special dance though our unique music. I am fully committed to this group and will hold myself to a higher standard while sitting on your Board of Directors.
Hello fellow Shag Club members, my name is Bill Bacon and I am running for the office of Vice President of the O.D. Shag Club for 2016. To give you a little information about myself, I was born in Wilmington but grew up in Whitevillle, N.C., only about 42 miles from Ocean Drive. I knew when I came to O.D. for the first time, when I was about 5 years old, that one day I would live here and now I do!
In high school we would come to the beach nearly every Saturday night in the summer and usually go to Sonny’s in Cherry Grove (where HOTOS is or maybe by the time you read this, Was). Sometimes we would go to the Pad, the Barrel and the Spanish Galleon, where we usually went when I was in college.
After college and law school I practiced law in Clinton, N.C. for over 40 years. I have two married sons and my wife, Joan, has two married daughters. Between us, we have seven grandchildren ranging from first graders to first year in college!
As I said, I live in the Ocean Drive section of NMB now. We bought a condo in Cherry Grove in 1999, then started building our home in Ocean Drive in 2005 but didn’t get in until 2006. My wife and I joined the O.D. Shag Club shortly after that and have been members ever since.
Needless to say, this is the BEST club with the nicest and friendliest people I have ever seen.
Since being a member, I have helped with numerous oyster roasts, Clean Sweeps and other events. I was fortunate enough to be elected to serve on the Board of the O.D.Shag club for the past two years and have really enjoyed it.
I hope my years of experience as a practicing lawyer in N.C. have been a benefit to our Shag Club and hope to continue to serve the club next year as your Vice President.

Our 25th Annual SOS/ODSC Charity Golf Tournament was again held at the Valley at Eastport Golf Club in Little River, SC. Seventy-three golfers took part on a beautiful day for golf. Everyone enjoyed meeting and greeting old and new friends. The golfers were from all over the US and a lot of local players also.
Golfers started arriving about 7:30 am. They were greeted by the ladies and bags were checked in. Liquid sunshine, biscuits and donuts were available for everyone. After a brief welcome by Geoffrey Girling and Bill Jones, the GM of the golf course, Sonny Tomberlin explained the changes in the rules, the putting contest, the marshmallow long drive contest and shortcut to eagle. The shortcut to eagle gave the golfers an opportunity to play from the 150 yard marker.
All winning teams scored under par.
The following golfers won cash prizes:
Glen Phillips – closest to the pin
Pat Lynch – closest to the pin
Ron Lewis – putting Contest
Curtis Edmondson – marshmallow long drive

This year’s golf tournament was led by Geoffrey Girling and Sonny Tomberlin. The Raffle Prizes and the hole sponsors was led by Karen and Rich Young. Board Liaison was Brian Schmitt. Administrative assistance was provided by Joyce Girling, Monica Powell and Karen Young.
Many ODSC members participated in obtaining hole sponsors and prize donations. Many members also participated on Tournament Day doing various jobs from picking up food, registering golfers, checking bags, selling mulligans and raffle tickets, cooking hamburgers and hot dogs to being cart girls. All volunteers added to the success of the tournament. Our Club is fortunate to have each of these caring and participating volunteers. As always, special thanks to each of them for their dedication and participation.
